(By Telegkaph.) Auckland, Sept. 5. In the case of Smith, Inspector of Industrial Schools v. Pearson, the Resident Magistrate, Mr Seth Smith, m his decision today decided Mr Warkworth, the justice, had no power to hear it and dismissed the case, as any Beaident Magistrate had jurisdiction to hear such cases as default for maintenance of children m schools. A Caledonian Society has been formed. Judge Gillies has become patron. A boy of the Kohimarama Training Sohool, aged 13, self inflicted serious injuries requiring hjj removal to Auckland for treatment. At the instance of ratepayers a Supreme Court injunction will be applied for against the Board of Education for paying from their funds a sum of £200 salary for which the Judge declared members were personally liable. The Lascars forming the crew of the ship Nerbudda have struck work on the ground that they got no breakfast this morning. A fire broke out at 2 a.m. at Captain W. F. Hargreaves premises, Franklyn street, ending m the destruction of three shops and dwellings. Hargreaves sustained a total loss. The insurances were— Furniture and stock of groceries £250 m the Colonial Office (owner, J. Crombie), and £300 m the Northern. Charles Chambers' green grocer's stock was partially saved. The owner (B. Anderson) lives m the country, and the insurance is unknown. Dennis Holland, a bootmaker, had his stock saved, and the owner (J. Spence), had the place insured for £175 m the Sonth British Office. The origin of the fire is unknown. Some of Hargreaves' family had a narrow escape. Sslsos, Bept. 6. A great railway demonstration m connection with the Nelson branch of the Bailway League took place this afternoon m a paddock near the centre of the town, when it was estimated abont 5000 persons were present, many having come m from the country. Every place of business was closed for a couple of hours. The streets were decorated and the band turned out, but there was no procession owing to the want of time to organise one. The greatest enthusiasm preTailed, and the several speakers were cheered. The chief, resolution expressed appreciation of the action of the Government and of those members of the House who are loyally supporting the construction of the East and West Coast and Nelson Bailway, and called upon every member of the Legislature having the welfare of the colony at heart to support by every legitimate means the construction of the railway. A resolution expressing thanks for the loyal support received from Canterbury and the West Coast was also carried with cheers. Westpoet, Sept. 5. The Mahinapua, which arrived from Nelson this morning, reports a fire on the beach at a spit near West Wanganui, where there is supposed to be shipwrecked sailors. DtTHEDijr, Bept. 5. A meeting of the creditors of Neill Bros, was held this morning, at which an offer of 6s m the £ was made, half m cash and half guaranteed by Mr P. C. Neill. The offer waa not accepted, but the meeting adjourned for ten days awaiting the reply of Mr Dymock from Melbourne.
