With reference to the American subsidy to the San Francisco mail service, Consul Gamble says m a letter to Mr Graves Aicken, President of the Auckland Chamber of Commerce, that v large sum voted by Congress for steam subsidies, now remains m the hands of the Postmaster-General at Washington, for distribution to the vavir-us ocean steam services, and as the Pacific Mail Company has the largest claim upon its apportionment, the San Francisco service must participate to a considerable extent. By the next mail ho expects to learn the exact amount allotted. A meeting of the unemployed, convened by Garrard tho labor agitatator for 10 o'clock this morning, was attended by only about a dozen persons. The convenor did not turn up, and nothing was done. Advice has been received by the Bank of New Zealand confirming tho sudden death of Mr MoKelvie. The Auckland Horticultural Society have soot a fine collection of apples, oranges, pears, lemons and guavas, including 200 varieties m all, to the Wellington Exhibition. The Aucklnnd Poultry Show opened to-day. There was a splendM lot of Southern entries, and about 90 Southern competitors. These i ere, howaver, beaten m most classes. Deal, of Canterbury, was the largest prize winner. T. Rogan, of Port Chalmers, won the Cup for Aylesbury Ducks. Uapibh, July 23. A special general meeting of the Chamber of Commerce was held to-day to consider the advisability of continuing the San Francisco mail subsidy. A resolution was carried unanimously against the continuance of a Pacific mail service. Wellington, July 23. The Stella has returned from Cape Pailiser. The captain reports having made a series of soundings off the coast near the Cape at from one and a-half to two miles off shore. No soundings could bo found at 260 fathoms, but at about half a mile from the Bhore a shoal was discovered on which the soundings averaged from 6 to 20 fathoms. This shoal has now been properly surveyed. A n? m named Cummings has been arrested for breaking into Kirkcaldie and Staines, drapers, and stealing silk valued at £40. The Gazette notifies the appointment of A. W. Mann as Registrar of marriages, births and deaths, and also as vaccination inspector for Temuka. DrNEDTN, July 23. The Invincible Company have obtained a yield of 417 ounces from 1011 tons of quartz. The Land Board to-day considered the cases of fourteen defaulting deferred payment selectors of land, and decided to call a forfeit within a month. In only one case reports are to be obtained from the rangers as to circumstances and occupations of others. The Rev. Gaulter's funeral to-day was attended by over 1000 persons. Intbrcabgilt,, July 23. The Invercargill Borough Council, acting as tho New River Harbor Board, have accepted the tender of Kincsid and McQueen, for a side ladder dredge at £2565. The other tenderers were K. Ij. Gray, of South Dunedin ; Sparrow and Co., Dunedin ; R. W. Harvey, Invercargill ; and Sutherland and Co., Nelson. A discussion took place over the acceptance of the tender, several Councillors urging the delay of a few days to see where the money was to come from to pay for the dredge, the Board being liable now for a considerable overdraft. The amendment to delay the acceptance was negatived.
