WAIMATE COUNTY COUNCIL.

The monthly meeting of the Waimate County Council was held on tho 29th instant. COUNOIILOBS PBESBNT. Messrs J. Manchester (Chairman), Turnbull, Hardie, Hayes, Douglas, McLaren, Murphy and Elworthy. COBBEBPONDENCE. After tho confirmation of the minutes of last meeting the following correspondence was read : — From Mr Bees, Sheep and Babbit Inspector, Timaru, calling attention to the j spread of gorse on the river-beds of the County, and suggesting that the gorse m such places be destroyed, as it forms an effectual harbor for rabbits, and referring to the Acts under which the Council can have this work done. From Mr James Andrews, and from other ratepayers of Makikihi Siding, asking to have about ten chains of road metalled between Main South Eoad and Upper Hook, near Mr Carter's farm. From the Selwyn County Council, asking the Council's views as to the introduction of sparrowhawks into the County to abate the small bird nuisance, and if willing to cooperate m their importation, and intimating that although large sums of money have been expended m tho Selwyn County m endeavoro to abate the nuisance, the small birds still increase m numbers. From Mr J. M. Miller, of Hakateramea Downs, asking to have the road line between Sections 13657 and 19341, 17870, 12636, situate on south side of Waimate Gorge, as it is quite useless and a nuisance as a harbor for stray cattle. From the Waimate Bailway Company, asking to have the portion of road closed between the two bridges over the North and South branches of the Waihoo, near Waihao Forks, which was required by the Company when the railway was under construction, the land for substitute portion of road m exchange having been transferred to tho Council by Mr Douglas. From Mr 0. D. E. Ward and seven other ratepayers of Hakateramea, praying for the formation of tho surveyed road leading direct from the Hakateramea township to the Upper Waitaki bridge, through reserve 261, and pointing out the great inconveaience experienced by traffic and travellers m following the present track. From Mr L. A. MacpheMon and six other landowners m tho Hakateramea "Valley, asking for the closing of the road line m Hakateramea Valley, passing through sections 317-15 and 28300, and the substitution of a road line about one and a-half miles further south. From Mr Charles Child's, asking for employment. HOSPITAL EEPOBT. The Hospital Surgeon reported — Patients admitted during tho month, 6 ; out patients, 11 ; discharged, 2 ; remaining under treatment, 7. BBSOLTJTIONa. After consideration of the letters received, the following resolutions were passed by tho meeting : — " That the letter from the Selwyn County Council be acknowledged with reference to the expenditure of County funds for the destruction of small birds, and m reply tho Council regrets its inability to join m the proposal." " That tho necessary step 3be taken for closing the road line as applied for by Mr Miller, subject to the approval of the adjoining land -owners." ( " That tbe necessary B tepß be taken to com-

plete the transfer of land given to the Railway Company m lieu of the road line given m exchange, the Company to bear the expense m terms of the Secretary's letter of 27th instant." " That the Engineer report upon the appli cation made by Judge Ward and others re making the road from the township of Sandhurst to the Waitaki bridge." "That the application of Mr L. A. Macpheraon and others re the closing of the road line ' to Hakateramea through sections 31745 and 28300 be attended to, and that a road line be taken when offered by applicants, the' expense of the transfer, less amount received by the Council by the sale of land on the road Line to be closed, to be paid by the applicants." " That Mr Moody's request to open a road through Mr Klworthy'a land be acceded to, the cost of the transfer to be met out of the proceeds of the closed line at not less than £2 per acre, Mr Elworthy to purchase the same." " That the metal required as mentioned m the Engineer's report be tendered for." " That the Engineer and two members of this Council draw up a schedule of the works already authorised under the Roads and Bridges Construction Aot, m order that the Council may decide at next meeting what works will be carried out during the coming year." " That no further application be made to the Qovernmeut under the Roads and Bridges Construction Act unless the owner of the property to be benefited by the expenditure under the said Act agreeß to pay the 25 per cent required m clauses 12, 13, 14 and 15." " That the Engineer be instructed to have a side-railing erected on the bridges on the road leading past D. Martin's." " That m advertising for applications for the office of Overseer, the Chairman be instructed to inform intending applicants that £50 per year will be allowed for travelling expenses. MISCELLANEOUS. Mr Bfardie was authorised to sign cheques for accounts this month, m place of Mr Studholme. The Clerk wns instructed to acknowledge the receipt of Mr Rees' letter, and reply that the Council were not aware of any _ place where the gorse nuisanco referred to exists. The application of Mr C. Childs was not entertained. TENDERS. Tenders for contract works were opened and considered, those of Mr D. Grant for Contracts Nos. 575 and 576, and that of Mr W. J. Black for No. 577, being accepted. ACCOUNTS. Accounts were passed for payment as follows :— On General Account, £638 13s 7d ; on Hospital Account, £69 19s 7d ; contractors' deposits returned, £69 8s 2d. The Council then adjourned.
