THE RIFLE MATCH— ENGLISH V. SCOTCH.
TO THE EDITOR OP THE TLMARU HERALD. Sib, — Your issue of Saturday contains a report of the rifle match fired at the Otipua range between Englishmen and Scotchmen ; I wbb sorry to observe your reporter's remarks thereon. It is very obvious that there is a little grievance at the result or it would not have been stated that it was principally due to an " average " having to be struck, owing to two members of the winning team " unfortunately for their opponents not putting man appearance." Now, sir, I think you will agree with me that the above reflection is altogether uncalled for. For my own part I have the assurance to think that had the two absent members been there the match might havo been Btill more decided, as their scores are to say the least not usually found at the bottom of the list. Occasionally the reverse. Had your reporter analyised tho scores ho would have found, taking the threo top scores on each side, that the Englishmen were five points ahead, und taking the five highest scores the Englishmen were three points ahead, so that the Englishmen have clearly scored a win. I am, &c, John Peabson.
