THE PREMIER SELF-TWINE-BINDER-HORNSBY'S MACHINE Has taken the FIRST PRIZES m England, Scotland, and France this Season. AT tho last COMPETITION at the Royal Agricultural Society of England's trials at Shrewsbury, HORNSBY'S MACHINE beat McCormick's, Woods', Johnston Howard, Samuelson, and others — 16 m al! — most of whom had Two and Three Machines m Competition. It took the FIRST PRIZE of £100. The following Extracts from the local Newspapers shew where its strong points were proved : — After watching tho contest from day to day, we are convinced that the prizes are thoroughly well deserved by thoao upon whom they are bestowed. Not a breath as to the existence of favoritism reached our ears. Even the most disappointed competitor must admit ho has icen fairly beaten. Nothing could havo been more praiseworthy than tho manner m which the judges and stewards aliko assiduously devoted themselves to an arduous task, diligently toiling round each plot after the competing machines, undor a burning sun, for more than six long days, and making copious notos of the several performances. Their unflagging zeal was a subject of common remark. Messrs Hornsby and Sons started work with their new string sheaf-binding harvester, which got through the allotted portion with great credit, picking up almost every straw and throwing off well-bound sheaves of fair sizo. Later m tho day tho samo firm showed their 1884 string binding harvester, which did its work pretty much m the same fashion, leaving a clean stubbio. Messrs Hornsby's third machine, which was also set m motion, maue good progress. The English maohines which gained tho prizes may bo said to have done so chiefly becauso they wero more solidly built, and stronger than tho American machines, and oonld bo put at tho work, "do it or break," withont fear. Hence they got through owing to solidity and strength. Not that tho American machinos broke, but thoy would not stand what the Hornby machines, for instanco, could.— Engineer, August 15th and 22nd, 1884. Tho general ontcomo of these scientifically conducted and severe tosts is most satisfactory to tho English manufacturers of sheaf-binders, inasmuch as thoy have completely beaten the American machines, and havo shown that the EDglish binders are best adapted to our own crops. — The Ironmonger. Tho harvest season has been a great one for tho makers of solfbinding machines, whioh havo been pitted one against the othor all over the country. All appear to work well, but it is a matter of satisfaction to rind that Hornßb.y'B. the English makers' machines, have generally had the palm awarded to them. and this was particularly tho caso at the trials made m connection with tho Royal Agrioultnral Society meeting this year at Shrewsbury.— Rctford Times, August 22nd, 1884. As will bo seen from tho length of time oeoupied, this ia undoubtedly tho greatest and most exhaustive tost of binders that has over taken placo at any show. The Hornsby made the throe stipulated circuits of the field m fine style, doing its work m the most satisactory manner, and gathering up and tying the crop admirably. The remaining two of Hornsby's maohinos wero last m the competition, and they also did tho work allotted to them equally well. The other four machinos came on for trial, with various degrees of succobs ; bnt none reached tho standard of perfection attained by the "Hornaby," all of them becoming more or loss clogged up, and having to bo cleared by manual labor. McCormick'B machine — tho only Amerioan loft m the field to commence tho day with — fell out by 1 o'clock, having failed to cope with tho crop, and Indeed, running oloan over it when laid. Tho' " Hornsby " haa during tho last two months taken tho highest awards at the latest great trials, including ono m France. It has boon received with general favor. — Sheffield Independent, August lGth.
