THE STRANDING OF THE STAR OF THE SOUTH AT GREYMOUTH.

Tho hull of the Star of the South was insured for .£SOO each m the South British, New Zealand and United, and .£2.50 each m the Standard, Thames and Mer3ey, and Mersey and National ; also, .£SOO m a Home office. It is now doubtful whether she will be got off. Gkeymouth, Dec. 23. The Star of the South is gradually slipping into the river, and her chains and hawsers ara at the ntmost points of tension. The bow is still oat of water, bat the greater portion of the hull is submerged, and the water is half way up the smoke stacks. Other steamors are getting ready to go out to her assistance. The Star of the South haa not been touched to-day. Sho la steadily sinking down the stona slope, and although her stern must have been resting on the bottom for some time, ahe still sinks as if a scour was at work around her stern, allowing her to sink deeper. Her cargo haa been washing out of her hold all day, but the hull has apparently received no damage as yet. Her masts are still standing, and her sails aro set. Tho boats which were not removed floated away. One has siDco been picked up on the North Beach. Tho vessel will be sold by auction to-morrow morning for the benefit of whom it may conoern. Two surveys by nantieal men were held during tha day, and m each casa it was considered to * dangerous to life to bo on board. oe
