REAPERS AND THE PREMIER SELF-TWINE-BINDER-HORNSBY'S MACHINE Has taken the FIRST PRIZES m England, Scotland, and Franco this Season. AT the last COMPETITION at the Royal Agricultural Society of England's trials at Shrewsbury, HORNSBY'S MACHINE beat McCormick's, Woods', Johnston Howard, Samuelson, and others — 16 m all — most of whom had Two and Three Machines m Competition. It took the FIRST PRIZE of £100. The following Extracts from the local Newspapers shew where its strong points were proved : — After watching tho contest from day to day, wo are convinced that the prizes aro thoroughly woll deaorved by those npon whom they are bestowed. Not a breath aa to the existence of favoritism reached onr ears. Even the moat disappointed competitor must admit he has I benn fairly beaten. Nothing could havo been more praiseworthy than tho manner m which the judges and stewards alike assiduously devoted themselvos to an arduous task, diligently toiling round each plot after tho competing machines, under a burning sun, for more than six long days, and making copious notes of the several performances. Their unflagging zeal was a subject of common remark. Messrs Hornsby and Son 3 Btarted work with their now string shoaf-bindiug harvester, which got through tho allotted portion with great credit, picking up almost every straw and throwing off well-hound sheaves of fair size. Later m tho day tho samo firm Bhowed their 188 i string binding harvester, which did its work pretty mneh m the samo fashion, leaving a clean stubble. Messrs Hornaby's third machine, which was also 6et m motion, inaOo good progress. Tho English machines which gained tho prizes may be said to havo done so ohiefly beoause they wore moro solidly built, and stronger than tho American machines, and could bo put at tho work, "do it or break," without fear. Honce thoy got through owing to solidity and strength. Not that tho American machines broke, but they would not stand what tho Hornbs' machines, for instance, eonld.— Engineer, August 15th and 22nd, 1884. conducted and sovero tests is most satisfactory to tho English mannf acturors of sheaf -binders, inasmuch as they havo completely beaten tho American machines, and havo shown that tho English binders aro best adapted to our own orops. — The Ironmonger. Tho harvest season has boon a groat ono for the makers of solfbinding machines, which havo boon pitted ono against tho othor all over the country. All appear to work well, bnt it is a matter of satisfaction to find that Hornsby'a, tho English makers' machines, liavo generally had tho palm awarded to thorn. and this was particularly the case at the trials made m connection with tho Royal Agrijultural Society mooting this year at Shrewsbury.— Etljord Times, August 22nd, 1884. Aa will ho seen from tho length of time occupied, this is undoubtedly the greatest and most exhaustive test of binders that has over taken plaoo at any show. Tho Horasby mado bhe threo stipulated cirenits of tho field m tine stylo, doing its work m tho most satisfactory manner, and gathering up and tying tho crop admirably. Tho remaining two of Hornsby's machines woro last m tho competition, and thoy also did tho work allotted to them equally well. The othor four machines oame on for trial, with various degrees of Bucooss ; bnt none readied the standard of perfection attninod by tho "Hornsby," all of them becoming more or loss cloggod up, and having to bo eloarod by manual labor. McCormiok'n machine — the only American loft m tho field to commence tho day with — fell out by 1 o'clock, having failed to copo with tho crop, and indeed, running olean ovor it when laid. Tho " Hornsby " has during tho last two months taken tho highost awards at tho latost groat trials, including ono m Frauoo. It has been recoivod with general favor. — Sheffield Independent, August lGth.
