CHRISTMAS CHEER.
The display of goods last evening by various establishments m town was equal, if not superior, to any that has beon held irt Timaru before. In" this issue, however, wo only propose to mention the butchers, whose goods would not keep for long m such mixed weather as we are getting just now. Of course the grand, or what may be styled the miscellaneous show of Christmas goods throughout the town takes place this evening Christmas Eve. If the streets are twice as well thronged to-night as they were last night we feel satisfied our shopkeopeW -will have a busy time of it during the holidays, and that the greeting " A Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year " will not be an idle one so far as they are concerned/ THE ZEAMNDIA BUTOHBBT. : Messrs Peacock and Geaney had certainly every reason to be proud of the show of Christmas meat they made yesterday evening. They evidently intendod to impress on all that good times were coming, and that Zealandia would be ever green. Mr T. Harney hod been engaged to take charge of tho decorations of tho shop, and no little credit was due to him for tho manner m which he carried out his work. Tho ; th'oirof meat m the shop was bettor than we have ever seen beforo m Timaru. It would bo impossible for us to go into particulars of tho hundred and ono delicacies on view. Tho tefct of tho pudding is m the eating thereof, and this was proved by the way m wliich tho Zealandia Butchery was patronised. The Hibernian Band at tho Church street corner, attd the Artillery Band at the Sophia street one added not a little to tho attractions of the scene. GILCHBIST AND TOMtIIfSOK. Although tho City Butchery is a small one, itjis nevertheless compact, and tho show of meat last evening could not bo beaton. The arranging was all done by the employees of tho firm, no outßide assistance being called m. Tho remarks passed u,pon the general " get up " of tho City by those who were m its vicinity were certainly highly flattering, Mr Grant a mutton being especially admired. OWBNB, KNOTT AND BCAKF. Though a now, this firm, judging by appearances, gives fair promi'e of being an cntorprising one, that is if we are to take their show of Christmas meat as a criterion, Although laet evening thoy bad not laid themselves out to make a great display, their shop presented a clean, wholesome, and businesslike appearance, thore being quite a run of south-ond folk on it.
