A patient at the quarantine station named Casey has died of smallpox. No fresli match has yet beeu arranged between Beach and Clifford, m place of the one which was fixed for the 20th February next, bnt which fell through owing to Beach forfeiting through mistake. Hobart, Dec. 22. Arrived, on Saturday — Shaw, Saville and Albion Company's Arawa, en route for New Zealand. Melbourne, Dec. 22. Mr Murray-Smith, tho A»ent-Geiieral m London, telegraphs to Government thnt ho haß seen Sir Robert Herbert, Permanent Secretary of the Colonial Office, and that that official doubts the reported German annexation of the northern portion of New Guinea and the islands of New Britain, New Ireland, New Hanover, and the Admiralty Group. Mr Smith adds that the German Embassy m London denies the truth of the information received to that effect.
