The Postaj,. and Telegeafh Guidb.— We have to aoknowlodgo the receipt of tbe New Zealand Postal and Telegraph Guide for July. Political Addeesses. —The Hon. Mr Rolleslon speaks at Pleasant Valley this evening ; Mr Cox at Winchester j Mr Sutter at Fairlie Creek, and Mr Steward at Makikihi. Public Haif-Holiday. -In response to a requisition from citizens, His Worship the iilayor has proclaimed a half-holiday from noon ou Friday neit, on the occasion of tho Steeplechnses of theSouth Canterbury Jockey Club. The Opihi Bbidge. —By order of the Gentldine County Council the Opihi road bridge will be closed for traffic from Monday next until the completion of the new bridge over the northern branch of the river. Concert. —A concert m aid of the school funds is to be held on July 16th m tho schoolroom, Washdyke. A capital programme lias been prepared, and tho concert promises to bo, ns previous ones have always been, a success. Particulars of the concert are to be published early next week. IsiPORTAftT Salb. —We would draw attention tion to a very extensive sale of land, live and dead.farm stock, furniture and sundries, to be held by the N.Z.L. and MA. Company at Bnkaia on Thursday and Friday, tho 17th and 18th instant. Temperance Mission. —Mr Henry Barker, Secretary to the lilue Ribbon Temperance Mission, notifies that at tho next meeting to be held at 7.30 p.m. on Thursday m tho Barnard Street Hall, matters of great importance will come under consideration. The Roy. Seth-Smith and others will address the meeting. Dbunkenhbsb. —No less than five men were taken into custody yesterday by the police for boicg<lrunk m the public streets, In one case two were kissing one another m the most approved Maori stylo, i.e., by rubbing noses, and felt much aggrieved when they wero fold it was contrary to the law to make such asses of themselves. The WArsiATE Seat.—On reference to our advertising columns this morning, it will be seen that two more candidates are announced for Waimato. They are Mr Alpheus Hayes and Mr W. J. Black, both of whom come forward m response to numerously signed requisitions. My Hayes publishes the dales and places on and at which he will meet the electors, beginning with St. Andrews, on Monday next. A Nou'-wksteb. —Yesterday afternoon a warm nor'-wester, a veritable Spring wind, set m and blew very stilUy for an hour or two, the night afterwards being quite warm throughout. Wo have had an unusually fine Winter, and now it seems as if we nre to be blossed with an unusually early Spring. The warm wind would probably reduce tho quantity of snow on the ranges a good deal, and raise the larger rivers somewhat. Fire at Willow Bridge. —About halfpast four on the afternoon of Sunday last, about 800 bushels of threshed wheat oolonging to Mr Studhohne, were destroyed by fire on his estate at Willow Bridge, about six miloj from Waimato. Tho grain was uninsured. From circumstances surrounding the case, incendiarism is strongly suspected. Another stack of grain would have been burned but for the assistance of men who came up on Bccing the firo. Studholmb Junction. —Wo are glad to learn that tho travelling public will not much longer bo inconvenienced by the Government b:irbcd barrior to refreshments, as an underground communication is about to be commoneefl between tho railway platform and and Watkins' Hotel; and we learn also that tea and coffee "will shortly bo obtainable nt the station buildings once more. It has been felt a very great inconvenience, tho inability ■ io get any warm refreshments during the winter at this station, especially as passongors occasionally havo to wait half an hour for their trains. PettT Labcknies. — Rumors and complaints are again reaching our ears as to tho provalence of petty larceny m various parts of tho suburbs. Wo hear of tho family linen, clothes lino and oil, being made a clean sweep of m several instances, of valuable fowls disappearing, and last, but not least, of a live pig being killed and carted away from its stye. All we can say is that if thoso who are victims of the pilferers do not report tho matter at once to tho polico they doserve to suffer. They cannot expoct a detective or a constable to learn theso things by instinct, or to make house-to-house visits asking if they havo lost a rooster, or a garment, or a log of wood, or a lump of coal, or even a live pig. By not acquainting the authorities of their losses, people encourage petty larcenies of this sort. Washdtkb School. —A meeting of the obovo Committee was held on Monday evening, 7th July. Presont —Messrs Stevenson (Chairman), Peebles, Raddon, Stocker and' Aker. Correspondence was read from Mr J. H. Sutter —(l) Stating that ho had resolvod to distribute £100 of his honorarium among tho schools and libraries m the Gladstono district, and thut tho amount givon to tho Woshdyke school was £4 10s, for which ho onclosod a cheque (2) From tho same gontleman, asking tho use of the school for tho purpose of holding a political meeting. It was resolved- "That the donation bo accepted, and that tho hearty thanks of tho Committeo bo accorded the donor." Tho action of tho Chairman re granting use of tho school to Mr Sutter was approved. The Committee then proceoded to make arrangomonts for tho concert to bo hold, on Wednesday,, July 16th, after which tho meeting 1 closed. Delaying Justice.—There is a caso now beforo tho Residont Magistrate's Court, tho plaintiff m which must think ho has mado a mietako and got his little affair m Chancery. This is Mr Tanner, a seafaring man, who is •uing tho master of the barque Mary Ann Anmson, now on her way to another colony, for a month's wages m lieu of notice of dismissal. As tho vessel was ready to sail boforo the case could bo heard m duo course, tho evidenco of the defendant and one witness was takon m writing, and is now attached to tho papers filed m Court. The caso was called on last wcokj nnd was adjourned by tho Resident Magistrate on tho ground that tho evidonco was voluminous, and would tako some timo to look through, and yesterday two Justices of tho Poaco adjourned it for another week for tho same rooson. Tho evidence will havo to be gone through by somo ono, and it would no doubt take much less time to rood it than it would do to obtain a similar quantity of ovidonce by oral examination ; yof. it would not be oonsidorcd a good excuse for adjourning a caee, early iv the day, that tho examination of witnesses was likely to tako somo time. These adjournments are undoniably hard on tho plaintiff, who, it woe stated yesterday, is boing kept m Timaru awaiting tho issuo of iiis suit. - A New SBA-atowsTßß. —A 'submarine boat which ought to be able to destroy tho navies of the world has been made at Stockholm. It was triod on tho Malar Lake, nnd will shortly be brought, over to Franco. Tho boat has tho shapo of a c'garyis 64' feot long,-6 f««t wido, and has an engine of 80 horse-power. It is said that it can be navigated under water, goes at tho spcod of ton nautical miles an hoar, and that four, persons can without any danger remain In it for six hourt running. Tho cyllndor-shopod funnel is tho only part of thp boat which Is visible. A winding stair leads to'the boat, wbioh is steered from' the

top of the cylinder, where a glass roof enables the man at the wheel to see the surface of the water and direct the oourse of his strange submarine engine of destruction. A Slight Mibtakb. — A few weeks ago a gentleman entered the office of a well-known insurance agent, and tossing a paper on tho counter,. said to the olerk : " That's run out, and I want to get it renewed." The clerk unfolded the document, and with a smile, inquired : " Are you sure that this has run out ? " " O yes," said tho gentleman, " my wifo told mo that it ran out yesterday." " Well, I am sorry for you ; but we are not taking that kind of risks now," respondod the clerk, as ho handed it back to him. It was his marriage certificate. * ' SYNOPSIS OF NEW ADVERTISEMENTS.
