RAILWAY RETURNS.
Tho following table extracted from the Gazette dated the 29th ult., shows tho mileage, revenue and expenditure on the several sections of workiug railways m the colony for the financial year 1883-4 (shillings and ponoe being omitted): — NOBTH ISIASD. Miles Section. °P- Revenue. **%£» Traffio.
In the year 1883-4 the total expenditure amounted to 68.24 per cent, and m 1882-3 to 62 18 per cent of the total revenue of each year respectively. On tho North I»land railways m 1883-4, 73.29 per cent, and on the South Island Railways 66.49 p>r cent of the respective revenues was expended. The number of cattle moved by rail was 26,393, an increase of 2695 on tbe previous year. The number of sheep inorod was 627,090, nearly half as many more as m 1882-8. Chaff, &0., wool, firewood, timber, grain, merchandise and minerals are all estimated m tons, and tbe total tonnage moved on all sections last yonr was 1,700,040, an increase of 135,2)7 tons on the proviouj year. Bather more than one-third of the total is credited to minerals, rather more than onefourth to grain, and rather more than onefifth to merchandise. We have taken the trouble to calculate roughly the percentage on the coat of construction paid by each section — taking the cost given ia the table above, and for the amount available for payment of interest the excess of revenue over expenditure during the year — with the following result : — Per cent.
