At the Resident Magistrate's Court three Maoris, two men and one woman, were today committed for trial at the Supreme Court for burning down a whare at Muriomutu on the Ist May last. A dispute arose between two tribes as to the title to a piece of land about to go through the Land Court, and tho defendants burnt the whore to eject tho occupants, a -Maori woman and her European husband, whom they regard as intruders. Bail was allowed, and Topia beoame surety. Wellington, Feb. 11. The Hons. Messrs Bryco and Rolleston leave bj- tho Hinemoa this evening for Auckland viA Kawhia. Their visit is iv connection with tho Thermal Springs at Botorua. On Wednesday last, Donald Smith, formerly a farmer at Otaki, recently residing at Carterton, was about to again remove his household goods to Masterton, when he left home to purchase some biscuits prior to starting. Since then he has not returned, and nothing authentic can bo ascertained of his whereabouts. His friends have been searching, thinking he may have met with an accident. He was observed to cross the paddock opposite his house instead of taking the road to the store, but nothing was thought of it at the tune, until his continued absence gave cause for alarm. The elections for the Harbor Board reprosentatives took place to-day. For the Hutt County Council and the Chamber of Commerce respectively Messrs Lancaster and Nathan were reappointed ; for tho representation of the shipping interest Captain Rose and Mr T. K. McDonald wero nominated. The former gentleman was re-elected by a majority of five to one. For the City representation there were five candidates, and tho election resulted m Messrs J. H. Heaton and John Duthie being the successful candidates. The other candidates were Messrs G. Allan, R. Gardner, and W. McKeever. A warrant has been issued for the arrest of W. C. McDormott, a clerk m the Goverment Insurance Department. He is charged with embezzling £49 by falsifying the books. It is believed McDermott has left Wellington. John Margetts, who was arrested last week on a charge of obtaining money by false pretences at Auckland and discharged, was re-arrested to-day on the same charge and remanded. Mr Gray, Secretary of the Post-office, reports that the steamer Zealandia, although late, brings only a part of the usual mail. Tho Germanic, with the bulk of the London mails, broke down shortly after leaving, and was compelled to return, but sho had not reached Liverpool up to the time tho Zealandia sailed. The mails consist, on this occasion, of only 174 bags fortius colony, instead of between three and four hundred. Last month'i! steamor brought 362 bags. Tho Wanaka, with the Southern portiou of tho San Francisco mail, crossed the Manakau bar at one this afternoon. She goes via Tardnaki only, and is expected to arrive hero lato to-morrow night. The South Island maib will bo sent on immediately after the Wanaka's arrival. GrtBYMOUTn, Feb. 11. It is understood tbat work will shortly be resumed m tho Westport Colliery Company's Wallsond mine on a new principle, nil tho work that is possiblo being let by tender. A Government proclamation, warning persons not to interfere with Government property, has now boon affixed on nil the State schools and offices iv this district. Mr Duncan Wright, tho well-known Presbyterian Evangelist, was near Gore on Saturday m a buggy with a resident clergyman, when the bridle came off tho horse's head. Tho hoi*se ran away and tho occupants were thrown out. The clergyman escaped unhurt, but Mr Wright had ono leg broken aud tho other badly bruisod. The North Dunedin Rifles sent a team of fivo men to Auckland to compote m the Company match. In the senior Cup match, Cavisbrook v. Albion Fifteen, McNeil made 63, Collinson 44, and Rattray 22, out of a total of 172. The New Zealand Shipping Company have received tho following cable : — ThoTongariro arrived at Plymouth on tho Bth, after thirty days and three hours steaming. Her meat is m primo condition. The annual meeting of tho South New Zealand Financo Company, Limited, took place to-night, whon tho balance-shoot and tho Directors' report, recommending a dividend of nine per cent per annum, was adopted. The Company was started about fifteen months ago on tho lines of tho Dunedin Finance Company and tho Wellington Trust ond Loon Company, taking over the business of the Invorcargill Pormanent Building Society. Its success was favorably commented upon by tho shareholders, and tho retiring Directors wcro re-oloctod. Tho weather is again vory wet bore tonight. H.M.,3. Espioglo will probably visit Bluff about tho ISfcli inst., and stay thrco days. Tho tramway system is now complete, and j is working from tho South to tho North Town J Bolt, and two miles out on tho North road.
