CORRESPONDENCE.

THE MARKET RESERVE,

TO THB BDITOB OP TIIK TIHABU HBttiLD,

Sill,— Tho action of the Borough Council m rejecting Mr Stone's business-like proposal re the vacant land at their disposal is not likely to find much favor among those to whom the want of a market has betn sorely felt. The country has at times been styled the backbone of the town, and if this is so, surely the farmers are entitled to some consideration even from the body thst represents the Borough merely • but that class is not the only one that would derive benefit, •Ten by temporary market accommodation. If the reserve is to be only used as a store for the Council's water pipe*, or bo placed at the disposal of the nipbnlting contractor and tb» scavenger, the eooner the Government take meant to resume poesession of the land and vest the trust m more rapiblo hands the better. The resolution of Councillors Hill •nd Jones would be Iho idea of most people. Even if a little expense was incurred m drawing up »nd printing the elaborate paraphernalia that Councillor Gibson deems indispensable, would the Council nit be speedily reimburaed ? I venture to think, with nil deference to tho august body thai limboed the only sensible proposal that ha< been made With regard to this natter, that had the same reserve been vestei iv a Road Board instead of the Borough Council, a structure for the accommodation of those who buy and sell would have been erected long ere thif, and the came would now be creating a substantial source of revenue. The district, a* seen through the spectacles of some of the Councillors, covers very little ground, and ihe spirit of enterprise among several seems at rather low ebb. The farmers hive every right to use the reserve, as well as the persons before mentioned, *nd they should bick their vehicles upon it and test the question. The thauks of the community are certainly due to Mr Stone for having brought this matter forward. Trusting to sco it still further ventilated by those to whom the market would be a benefit, I am, &c,, Faemkb.
