In consequence of the action of the Sydenbam Licensing Court with reference to the protest made by tho Linwood residents against the licensing of an hotel at Lancaster Park, a clause ia to be introduced into Mr M. W. Green's Local Option Bill on a radios instead of a district principle. All petitions bearing on the Bill should be m Wellington before July 4th next. The half-yearly law examinations are to be held m August instead of September. There aro 61 applicants for examination as solicitors and 2 as barristers. Three gentlemen previously admitted elsewhere desire to prove their qualification for admission to the New Zealand Bar, and one admitted elsewhere wishes to be admitted as a solicitor. Messrs T. S. Wetton and Allan Holmes are the Examiners. Gamabu, June 19. Mr Backs Bockwood won the All-Aged Stakes of the Oamaru Farmers' CoumDg Club meeting to-day, Mr Stewart's Skiddaw Lass being runner-up. At the meeting, a spectator named Walsh was throws from his horse on to his head and severely injured. Ho was brought into town for medical attenddance. A farmer named Johnson alro received injuries by a fail. Dunbdin, June 19. Tbe enquiry into the goods sheds fire was continued to-day. Nothing has been elicited to suggest a cause for the outbreak. The engine which shunted the trucks into the shed on the day of the fire, only went just insido the north door, so that the fire could scarcely have been caused by it as the flames broke out at the south end. The engine driver thought it unlikely that sparks were emitted from the funnel, as they were only emitted when the engine was under extra pressure. No direct evidence was obtained about smoking, which was forbidden. The enquiry will go on again to-morrow. Before the Resident Magistrate to-day the case of Maitland v. Smith, m which the Land Board seek to recover a penalty from the defendant for disobeying a summons to attend the dummyism enquiry, was entered upon. The language of the Act is that the Board may bold an enquiry m the case of a " dispute " about the sale of land, and for the Land Board it is to be proved that though Thomas Johnstone (m regard to whose purchase enquiry was being made) duly signed the conditions and completed the purchase, at the time of the sale, Alfred Eimbell afterwards " disputed " Johnttooe's right, on the ground that he was not a honafide purchaser. After bearing some evidence, tho case was adjourned till Thursday. Mr Isaacs, belonging to a survey party at Waikaia, was thrown from hia horse at Mandeville bridge and killed. The South Dunedin Borough Council had another rowdy meeting last night, calling for the interference of the police, who arrested the ex-Mayor, Osmond, who left the |Council Chamber under police escorr,acrowd following and hooting him. Inybbcabqilk, Jane 19. A telegram from The Elbow states that 0. Palmer, mailman between that place and Maroros, has been drowned m Elm Tree Creek. Tbe deceased is presumably the same person as the driver referred to by the " Vagnbond " m his late account of a trip from The Elbow to Lake Manapouri and Te Anau. He writes : — " Our young mailman is tbe most decent fellow who ever drove a horse ; be says no .word whioh might not be repeated m a drawing-room ; he is quiet, courteous, and civil, but cunning with tbe ribbons, and I am not at all surprised to learn that, light and inoffensive as he looks, he is the best man at The Elbow."
