Commercial Intelligence.

Timaru Herald Office, Wednesday Evening. Since oar but monthly report business has be«n quiet, and, to all appearance, sound. The fourth of the month passes over satisfactorily, and there are no speculations of any importance afloat. The building trades, which have been kept fairly active for some time past are beginning to complain of slackness, but otherwise, things aro fairly balanced. The several large additions to the buildings of the town, recently noticed by us, are approaching completion and, though others are spoken of, thare are as yet no signs of a commencement. The shipping trade of tho port has been fairly active during themonth, though, the grain season being over and stocks not by means heavy, no great increase of trade is to be expected until the wool ■eason comes round. In the grain market but little is doing. There have been two sales "of importance during the month ; one of the ■tranded City of Perth's cargo, and the other at the Studholme Junction grain stores, both by auction. The bulk of the grain offered, which comprised between 80,000 and 100,000 bushels of wheat, oats, and barley, was taken at very satisfactory prices by outBids buyers ; the highest value reached being; 4a 8d for a prime parcel of Tuscan wheat. Quotations are, nominally, wheat, 4s 5d to 4s 7d, according to qnalitjr, with the market almost bare of really first-class milling sorts ; oats — inactive at 2s lOd to 3s for ordinary feed to bright, plump milling ; barley— % 6d to 4a 6d, according to sample and threshed quality, with an entiro absence- of good brewer's parcels. The exports for the month consisted of: wheat, 10,855 sack« (43,420 bushels) ; oats 550 sacks (2200 bushels) ; barley, 131 sacks (536 bnshela) ; flour, 150 tons ; bran, 5 tons ; 17 sacks grass-scad; wool, 119 bales; 12 casks tallow ; 46 kegs butter ; 19 casks beef and pork.
