HEAVY GALES AND FLOODS AT NAPIER.
- ; ■ Napicb, Jane 8. The heavy rain during the last few days has caused tne most serious floods experienced for years. $he- whole, country round Napier is under water. The residents of Olire and Mesnee districts have had to ba removed m boats.. All the rivers hare overflowed , their banks, suspending vehicular traffic, and notice is gWen of the suepenthn of railway traffic should the rain continue, as the embankment near Waitangi is being washed away. . The Oounty. Council recently called the attention of the Government to tlie danger of this enbankmenb from tho alteration m the oovirse of the Ngaruroro river. The schooners Frank (Juy, Mary Wadley, and Silver Cloud, lying m the roaditead, have had to slip their anchors and beat oat, They appear to have got well : to sea, A heavy surf is breaking on the beaoh. There are signs o£ tho stoppage of the rain, though the wind keeps high. No loss of life is reported, and the losies of stock is believed to be small, the settlers having anticipated. the floods and driven the animals to • higher -ground. ,:. . . ....'.■ NAPIgB, June 10. . -The floods are subsiding., The beach is strewn with drift wood, dead sheep, cattle and hor«?8. Only ene loss of life is reported, that of Martin Shannassy,, who .was drowned by being, washed off his horse while crossing a oreek.- The coaphei from Jlaitings and Tardale haTo just been able to come into town this morning. Msnj parts, along the road are coveredV with water : above' the whtels. The railwsy between T«rn,d.on and Pastiogs ban been severely damaged, a.nd traffic cannot be resumed till Atonday at the earliest.'
