Duwbdiw, June 14. ■ The Oity Council intend taking legal action against Mr Proudfoot, the tramway proprietor, to ooropel him to cease using steam engines on the line. A meeting held on tho "Waikaka goldfleld carried a resolution m favor of a reduction of the gold duty and miners' rights, and blso expressed the opinion that miners should be allowed to prospect on private property, on condition that if payable (sold were found they should be allowed to purchase by arbitration ; and if payable gold were not found, the miners to restore the land to its previous state. Another wire-rope tramway it to be constructed m Dunedin, similar to ths> Raslyn one. This one will proceed up High street, which is very steep, to the Mornington subarb. Trnffio is expected to be begun by Christmas. Dr Maunsell, the Oity Health Officer, wrote to tbe Oity Counoil last night strongly urging the necessity of a fever hospital, and drawing attention to the grave consequences of longer allowing tbe iswage to run into the bay as at present. In regard to the latter question he recommended a trial of the scheme of sewage treatment invented by Mr T. O. Burt of this oity. IKTHHCABHILL, Jane 14. A boy named Adam Wells, aged ten years, who was recently committed to the Dnnedin Industrial School, was chargtd at the Court this morning with having absconded therefrom. It appeared he had walked to Invercargill, doing the journey m three days. The Magistrate ordered bit re-committal, a year being added to hit former term of oonaoe* ment. At a recent mseting of the Southland J net i- c tute, Mr Macurthur, Inspector of Forests, t read an interesting paper on " Forestry," m \ the course of which the opinion was expressed tbat if renxdiul nsta-ur, s were not parsed by Parliament, the country would suffer very 1 materially. Act, placing greater restrictions on the practice of traders giving bills of sale. These will be forwarded to the Minister of Justice and to the various colonial Chambers. The Chamber also paised a motion regretting its inability to send a delegate to the proposed conference at Wellington re the bankruptcy laws, but cordially approving of any efforts made for their amendment.
