The Theatre Bojal is to be re-opeoed by a •trong dramatic combination under Mr J. L. Hall, Bennett, an absoonding debtor from Christcburch, was arrested on the arrival of the Eotomahana. He wai brought up (hit afternoon at the Police Court and remanded to Christchurch. Ho bad atsumed a falie name on the voyage, and eraied the name of Bennett from bia boxee. The Good Templan are arranging to gire a reception to the Templars on board the ironclad Nelion. MABTOir, June 13. Wm. Camming, who was working at Mclndre's ttable here this morning apparently m good health, fell down and died instantiueously. The tuppoied cause of death is heart disease. Aleswprtb, accused of a similar offence, was found not guilty. Christohubch, June 13. A man wai fined £1 for firing off a revolver about midnight on Saturday m a public street. Judgment was reserved to-day m the case of Studholme t. the Queen. Mr Allison Smith, the Locomotive Engineer, ia evidence, said the spark catchers uaed were the belt I made. They had tried oil sorts, but none were perfect, though the apparatus vied ia New Zealand was the best invented. Mr Caleb Whitefoord and Dr Giles hare 1 for Dunedin to-morrow morning, to conduct an inquiry into the Benevolent Institution ' there. DnnEDin, June 13. . At an adjourned meeting of the Chamber 1 of Commerce, smongit the subjects that come I up were the proposed Agricultural College, ' the OUgo Central Railway, and the constit tution of the Harbor Board. A resolution • was carried affirming the desirability cf an : Agricultural College. With regard to the i Otago Central line, resolutions were carried . that m the opinion of the Chamber the line ' ihould bo prosecuted vigorously, and that if : a loan was raised a sufficient turn should be i allocated to complete the line to Lake Hawea, i but if no loan was raited then to complete it i to Taieri Lake. With regard to the Harbor - Board, a long discussion took place, andby > 15 to 14 it was decided that a reconstruction 1 was neceisary, and that a Committee be api pointed to confer with tbe Harbor Board on > the subject. i The Committee of tbe Mjrnington third I licensing district, where there was a tie ia the > local option polling, have now decided that i they cannot m consequence entertain any new > applications. i The District Executive Committee of the : T.O.G.T. have forwarded the following reso- ' lutione to tbe Danedia members of tbe Hoobo of Representatives : — (1) " That as the whole community suffer from the establishment of licensed house*, and are interested ia the continuance of the liquor traffic, it is desirable that the voting power under the several clauses of tbe Licensing Act be extended so that all persons on the electoral roll be allowed to Tote both at the annual election of the Licensing Committee and the triennial vote on local option." (2) "That licenses having been freely granted m some small districts for tbe sake of obtaining tbe license fees for local revenue, extra police protection being at the same time applied for, it is detirable that police charges be localised as well ai tbe liquor revenue." At the Cily Police Court to-day, Hugh Caller, a contractor, was fined 5s for paying workmen m a public-house. This is the first case of the kind that hat been brought before tbe New Zealand Courts, hence the nominal penaltj. The prisoner Kitto was marched through the streets to-day m manacles, and was escorted by two gaol officers. He has been examined by medical men m gaol, who pronounced him insane. Their report was forwarded to the Colonial Secretary, who ordered Kitto to bs removed to the Asylum pending his trial. . :
