OAMARU STEEPLECHASES.
Oamabu, June 12. There was a fair attendance at the steeplechases to-day, the weather being splendid. Ihe ground was heavy after the late rains, and m consequence the races ware not run m very quick time. Oamabtt Stexfixchasb Handicap, of 100 soys ; 3 miles. Mr Pilbrow's Clarence, 12st 71b .. ... 1 Mr Douglas' Baron, 10a 1 121b 2 Mr O'Brien's Trovatore, lOst 3lb 3 Why Not (lOit 121 b), Socket (Idt 101 b), Young Sledmere (lOst 101h), and Black Doctor (lOet) also started. A. G. waa scratched. After tbe start Rocket went to the front and led over the first hurdle. Trovatore ran round the second hurdle. Clarence and Baron took the gone fence together, all the others baulkisg. Clarence and Baron then took a long lead, the race being virtually left to themselves, for a aeries of baulks put the rest out altogether. Baron was allowed to lead Clarence, but it was only on sufferance, for on reaching tha straight, tbe latter was brought up, and without an effort won easily. Maidbk Putb of 35 soys. Two Miles. Mr Schluter's Battler 1 Mr Sutherland's Wild Boy 2 Mr Douglas' A. G. .... 3 Canard, Gangawa and Moltke alfo ran. Tborntop and Trovatore were scratched^ Moltke ram round and Battler fell at the first hurdle, but waa quickly remounted. This race was a series of mishaps and baulkings. Canard, the faverite, came down at tho water jump and was brought home. Wild Boy and A. G. were first, over the water jump, but both baulked at the hurdles on the flat, and were pasted by Battler who came m alone. After, about a quarter of an hoar's persuasion Wild Boy and A. G. were brought round, the others sot being persevered with. Tally-ho Stakes, of 50 soys 1 weight for • age. Clarence , , ... 1 ! Why Not ... ... ... ; 2 -Baron ... ... ... ... ... 3 Young Sledmere and Gangawa also ran. Baron led at the start, bat on neariog the Stand was passed by Clarence. The first water jump was negotiated by Baron and Clarence, but Young Sledmere and Why Not baulked. Gangawa had previously run off the oourse. At the second attempt Why Not was got over, and rapidly overhauled the leaders. At the second hurdle at the back of the course be was level with them, and then went on ia advance. Gangawa took the gorse fence about three lengths m advance of Clarence, but on the plough was pined by the latter, who led over the next gorss. On reaching the straight, Why Not made bis effort, and amidst some excitement Clarence won a good race by three-quarters of a length. Consolatiox . Bacb, of 30 soys. Black Doctor .;," 1 Gangawa t : ' ... 2 Trovatore ... 3 This was a good race. All the jumps were taken by Black Doctor. Gangawa .baulked once and Trovatore several times. The race was won by Black Doctor by. a neok. Wild Boy. also ran, but did not finish. ,
