CHAMBER OF COMMERCE.
An adjourned meeting of the Chamber of Commerce Committee was held m tho Secretary's office yesterday. Present— Mr B. Woollcombe (Chairman), Messrs Moody, Hutherfurd, Hall and Gibf on, and the, Secretary. ' , vrH^rfis. ' The minutes of last meeting were read and confirmed : — Letters Were' read from the Wellington, Napier, and Christchurch Chambers of Commerce, and from the Temuka Trades Protection .Association, relative to the bankruptcy laws. .... . ■ : v . ' Resolved— " That the members for South Canterbury be asked to support and . urge an alteration m the Bankruptcy Act, whereby greiter stringency as to allowing discbarges to bankrupts shall be enforced, and endorse the recommendation of the Canterbury Chamber of Commerce as to the amount of composition which shall entitle a bankrupt to his diicharge, and that any person who may become insolvent ihall go to an" official appointed for the purpose and file t> declaration of insolvency before him, for whioh a charge fixed by law •hall be made; no hwyers' expenses whatever ;boiog allowed put of the estnte." Resolved— " That this Chamber is of opinion that the proposal to abolish distraint for rent is calculated to do serious injury to owner* of property, andiidetrimental to the interest* of honest tenants | and they are alto of opinion that should this proposal become law, power should bs given the lessor to summarily eject a tenant without notice upon a failure to pay rent." Keaolved — "That oopies of the above resolution be forwarded to the members for South Canterbury, tbe Canterbury, Chamber of Commerce, ' and the Temuka Trades Proteotion Association." . . . . ■
