Divink Skrvicl: at Hasoitata.—On Sunday next, ihe 2Dth inst, tho Her George Barclay proposes to hold dirine service m the South R.ingiUta railway station. inoMrsos's Colossal Mirhor.—This illustration of the events of the Zulu w.ir will be open at the Theatre Royal, for fire nights only, from Tuesday, the 31st, inst, and as southern journals speak m romp imcntarj terms of the M irror, it will doubtless receive a fair share of patronage from the public of this district. A ConuECTIOK. —In our very latest telegrams m yesterday's Usue the first paragraph was made' to read, "In the Heichstag to-day Prince Bismarck made a speech m reference to the Imperial Rescript recently issued to tho Russian Parliament" | and further clown, the words '' by himself as Premier of the Russian Ministry" occur. We need hardly say that tho word intended to bo printed m bot'.i instances was Prussian, aud not llttssiaii. TnE City ov Cashmfrk's Anchor. —The anchor and the portion of the chain attacked to it, by winch the ship City of Cashmere was riding when she went adrift, were recovered yesterday. They prove conclusively that the fin of the shackle had come out, and thus set the vessel free to go ashore. As the shackle ami a portion of the key will be produced m Court on Monday, it is undesirable that we should, at present, pass any further remarks on the Occident with which the ship met. . Presentation'. —Wo learn from a Chrislohurch contemporary that the Southland Hussars hare presented their drill instructor, Captain Dundas, of Christchurch, with n handsome silver mounted riding whip, as a memento of his connection with their corps. The present was forwarded to Captain l)undas by Major Burwcll, the commanding officer of the Huesars, and was accompanied by a letter from that olllcer, stating that it had been subscribed for by the men of the corps. Popil Teachers' Examination. —The examination of tho pupil teachers m the South Canterbury district by Inspector Hammond was completed yesterday. Twenty-six teachers presented themselves. The examination was a comprehensive and searching one, and lusted thrco days. Mr Hammond at the same time conducted the certificate examination on behalf of tho Government. Six teacher* sat for the Class X certificate, and three are trying for the more advanced one of Class D. r J ho certificate examination is to be continued to-day and Saturday. Ijik Missing Man Thompson. —Con stable Brennan returned to Albury on Wednesday evening after a fruitless search for the man Thompson, who has bern roported missing from Burko's Pass for some days past. A large party have been out looking for him, but no tidings of him had been received up to yestordiy morning. There is little hope vow of his ever being found alivo. Is is understood Thompson has friends either iv Christchurch or Dunedin. Nkw Publication. —We have received the October, November and December nninbers of Thu Farm and Garden, a new American publication, demy-quarto size, of sixteen pages, .issued at Philadelphia at- the yearly subscription of fifty cents. Although, of course, intonded n:ainly for circulation m America, The Farm and Garden may prove a very acceptable addition to the farm literature of this colony, the majority of tho articles treating of agricultural and garden pursuits being practical and to tho point, while the general stylo und appearance of the publication aro of a high character. We have no hesitation m recommending tho paper to the farmers ami gardeners of this district as one containing not on'y information, but as treating of the question* of the day respecting agricnlturo and stock m a series of original papors Unit nro clevor and instructive. Tho New Zealand agent of the publication is Mr E. F. Cogan, of Cliristcliurcli. Resident Magistrate's Court, Temuka. —At this Court yesterday, S. D. Barker and J. Mendclson, Ksqrs, J.P.s presided. Thomas (JaiTncy was committed for trial on a charge of stealing a pair of trousers, a vest and other goods, the property of Mr Stoivy. Ten previous convictions had been recorded against him. Alfred Austin and Albert Moskius were charged with Iho larceny of a bottle of brandy from the Orari Hotel. MrJohnstone appeared for Aiutin. Tho Bench, after hearing the evidence, said the charg-s were proved, but owing to the good characters which the accused had previously borne, they would dismiss them with a caution, as they believed they would not have committed Hie the offence bVI they not been under tho m Uucnce of liquor. Concrete Cuankkli.inu.—Visitors to the Waimate township cannot, but. be struck with ihe very substantial sido channelling which has been laid clown by tho side of the main street leading from the railway station, and judging from tho appearance of it, it m more thnn likely that similar channelling will be adopted by the municipal authorities of other towns ore long. The material of which it i* constructed is concrete, composed of crushed river-bed Miingle and cement, shaped m moulds, nnd laid m blocks, the wholo being afterwards II >aled over. Uhcre is no comparison between this channelling and the rude unsightly stone gutters of limaru, and the prico at which it can be laid compete, £(J 10« per chain, is very reasonable. Besides this, concrete is utilised m various otl.er ways iv the Waimate district. 'I ho numerous wooden culverts ara fast disappearing, the moro durable material being worked m as required, and the drain pipes used m the locality are also mado of concrete, and are much more adapted to the purposes of dr.inpipes than those of earthenware, besidon being cheaper. The practical and successful application of concrete to these different purposes lius been accomplished by Mr Hillary, thti engineer tj tho Wnimatc County Council, who h.is bocn engaged m testing tlie value of the material for somo time past, nnd a staff of men is now kept regularly at work m tho Council's yard nrnkine. channelling blocks and drain piping as required. Tne Late Mr Orieksox.—Wo (Li/tteHon Times) aro sorry to havo to record tho death of Mr Grisrson, sen., who, as was announced m our is«uc of Wednesday, was thrown off tho box seat of Mr Scaton's 'bus iv Lower High Btrcot on Tuesday evoni'g. His death occurred about 8 o'clock yesterday morning at Mr Hale's residence, whither he was removed after the accident. He became slichtly conscious during the night, but never rallied, and died us above stated. An inquest on the body will bo held to day. The deceased gentleman was born at Brid^north, and was for a considerable time m business m Cardiff. He came to Canterbury about la years ago m tho ship Chariot of Fame. Shortly after his arrival he joined with Messrs Stringer and Slinckleton m oirryit.g on a general diapory business m Cliristcliurcli, and continued m the traHe until a few years ago. .-ineo then lie has lived a somewhat retired life, his only participations m public affairs being to act occasionally as Returning Officer atcleetione. He filled that, office for the Ueathcote district at tho last genoral elec tion Had Mr Orierson lived ho would have been 66 years of age today. He leaves 4 widow and family of sit dwghtere »nd tares ■081.
