NEW TEAR'S DAY.

As New Yt^ar's Day fell on a Sunday tl-.is yenr, Monday was observed as a general holiday m its place m nil parts of the colony. The weather, so far as tlouth Canterbury was concerned, was Cno m the ixtreroe. The morning broko bright and clear, and towards inid-doy tie heat became very grent, especially m Titnaru. Below we publish lull details of the principal fe*ti-.e gathering* m the district, which, as a wl.oie patted off moat successfully. SOUTH CANTERBURY CALEDONIAN SOCIETY'S ANNUAL SPOR'IS. Pesident, Mr 1). Mac-lean j Vice-President*, Me:sr» J. C. McKerrow and Jaruo« Kin;; ; Director! — Meters J. Bruce, J. Meiklr., W. W- Mackenzie, A. Sinclair, P. J. Bell, John Frasor, W. Evan«, K. Judges :— For General Games— Me*srs P. J. Bell, W. Kvans, J). Stuart, J. Meiklc, J. ('. McKerrow, R.Stewart, James Bruce, Mi Gill. T. R. Jonei", O. H. Wildie, A. >"rirgle, G. Stumbles, Xidw.-11, I). MoOuiMiCf, 6. ])urhiim, Dr Macintyre and Cnptiiin ilills ; (or Poncing, Mufio and Coituuie — Mcjsis A. Sinclair, John Kia.-cr, Gunt), MrPherj.-n, T. O'Dritco 1, J. I\ff, J. ."■pi line, Flalu-rty, P Lig rtwoo.i, George llun'o-, Janus Macd'Tinld (»f t-'nineliff) and T)r Macdonald ; Haodicappers, Menrs P. J. Bell and 1. B. Jonei. The annual sports held undir the auspice* of the South tunierbury Caledonian Si-eiely took place tn Jan 2, m Green* pacdock situatid at the lop of Elizabeth street, ai d were quite equal to tl oie of any previousyiar In fact they have now become fuch an eslubiithid ana popular institution and the programmo (O lengthy, that it '• quite lime they were spread over two day* instead of one, it bei»i! all but inipc^sible to do ju-tice to tliirty-one events m a single day, let Iha e.fficer» work ever (o hard and energetically. As showing tie magnitude the iports hare now reuched, we may mci tion that ovrr £230 whs paid away m priz s on Monday. From an curly hour m the morning Timaru presented a very lively acd animated appra'ai cc. Large number? of people dressed iv holiday costume, kept nrriiing by erery road, while the morning trains were crowded to excess. By 1 1 o'clock the streets were thronged, and it became a difficult matter to make headway aloni the footpaths. In fact, we do not remember ever having seen such a crush on them before, fey noon, howete 1 -, they were pretty well cleared, an exodus having taken place to the sports grounds. Ihe efficers of the Society, headed by the Tiniaru Artillery Baud, three pipers, and followed by several hundt-e 1 people, started from the Grosrenor Hotel at half-past 10 o'clock and down Cain's terrace, round the N Z.L- 6nd U.A, Company's corner and along the mam street to the Clarendon Hotel. There ihe {.rocestiun turned into Church street, tnbsrquenlly into Sophia street and finally ip Elizabeth street to the scene of the day's fts'iviiies. 'Ihe arrangements made for the day seemed to give general tatis r action, and it was evident the officers had tpared nritber pain nor trouUe to guard ng»in?t any cau/e for com-' plaint either on the purt of the competitor? m the various events or on that of the »pi-cta-torsi. Green's paddock, on which the sports were held, comprises about four acre* and ii about ten minutes' walk from the railway statiop. Toe ground ia not as levrl as could be w.»lied, a flight hollow running through the Cfnlreofrt. This drawback, however, was tl: but compensated for by the fact that Ihe •pectaiors were enabled to obtain a better view of the various events owing to the dip. The running course which was raped off end occupied tho centre of the ground, was nearly circular, snd was about 320 yards m circumference. The ground was rather bard, but despite this, capital time was male m raoht cf the events. In tho centre ef the ring was erected a stage for the danciog and musical contests, the Band being alto proTided with accommodation there. Over the Floge floated tho British rmign and the Sags of Scotland and Ireland, while over the various tents and booths alro floated the emblems cf the Three Kingdoms. One new feature on the ground was a grand stand overlooking the ring. A portion of it had been spt dally set apart tor ladies, and all parts of it were well patrouised during the day. Mcis r 9 Kichmond and Gardner, and Mr Fiaheity held tbe two general license booths, and ilr McKeown lbs two refreshment ones, and from all appearances must have driven a mating trad', es also must the owner of. the Merry-go-aound. At interval* t: c proceeding! were enlivened by telectiont pla/td by lh» Artillery Band and by the pipers. The atlendance during the afternoon must have amounted to between four anil five thousand, and a better behaved concourse of people could hardly be witnessed. There was n marked absence of drunkenness, and the duties of Inspector Pender and bis assistants were light m the extreme. W» have to thank the officers of Ihe Socifty, and m particular the Secretary, Mr \V. E. \Yhitcorube. for their courtesy during Ihe day to the members of the Preec, by providing them with a tint and m assisting them m every possible way. The day was all that could be deiired, the sun's rays being tempered by a light overcuet sky, und cool north-east airs coming off the sea. The attendance was poor, owing, no doubt, to superior counter attractions m Timaru and elsewhere. The sport was good, some of the events being well contested, although the courto was not by any meant a good cne, being croired by shallow gullie.\ and some of the turnings being too ■horp. A totaliiator bearing the legend " 0.J.C." was on Ihe ground, and was fairly patronised durine ihe d«y. Just before the starting of the first race a hare was put up m the midst of about 30 or 40 people, and the numerous degs which were about had a lively hunt ; puts, however, got clear. The following are the details of (he various events: — Handicap Hurdle Race, of 30 toys ; about 2 miles, over 8 flights or hurdle*. Mr H. Sohluter's b g Little John, aged, lift J. Armstrong) 1 Mr J. Coming into the straight the second time Milo was called on and a good race ensued, both taking the last hurdle together. Little John wa» the first to recover himself however, and won by a nei:k, hoth horses being particularly well ridden. Waimatk County Hack Hciu.le Race, of 15 BOV3 ; about a mile and a quarter ; for all horses th&t have not won public money exceeding 10 sots, and have been the bonafide property of residents m tho county for three months prior to date of entry. Mokarakara was remarkably well ridden by Henare Pohio, son of the l»to Maori chief at Waimate, hit riding being noticeable for both coolness and judgment. Wild Boy led all through the second limn until just before turning into the straight, when, his rider giving him hit head, he rushed away, winning m a canter, the other two fotnn distance behind.
