Timaru Herald Office, Wednesday Evening. General bnsinesa daring the past month ha; been fairly brisk, *ud we have heard few com plaint.! from merchants and others. The de liveries of wool have been heavy and the clii this season, owing to the mildness of thi winter, promises to be m oicea.s of that of last year. Harvesting operations are now m fall swing, though they nave been somewhat delayed by heary rains. Wheat m this district will prove a fair crop, notwithstanding the drought, but the oats on most farms are very light. What littlo barley thero is is good. No deliveries of the new season's grain have yet taken place, farmara being busy harvesting, bat it is probablo wheat will open at from 3s 9d to 4s, and oats Is 7d to Is lOd or 2s. The building trade is fairly brisk, owing to the large number of now baildings which aro being erected at the present time. These are principally of brick, bnt not a few wooden ones are m coarse of completion m the suburbs. The principal exports during tho month have beon an follow -. — 2255 bales wool, 16 boles akina, 1210 jacks flour, 115 do sharps, 125 do fowls' feed, 110 do bran, 1521 bushels barley, 15,50-1 do oats, 19,77 1 do wheat and 36 casks tallow. Quotations are as follows : — Mr J. G. Allen, Bolford Mills, reports as follows: — F100r, f.0.b., per ton, ill; ditto, ditto, per 1001 b bags, £11 10s; ditto ditto, 501 b, £12 10s ; sharp.?, £i 10s ; bran, £3 10s. Messrs Taylor and Bowie report as follows : — Flour (wholesale) is fetching £12 to £13 per ton; best oatmeal, £12; sharps, £1, f.0.b. ; bran, £3 10a, f.0.b. ; potatoes, 6s perewt. In building material, Mr John Jackson quotes as follows : — Timber — New Zealand ■white pine, from 12s per 100 ft; totira and black pine. Us to 20s per 100 f t; do, Van Diomen's Land, 22s per 100 f t; V.D.L. palings (oft), 225; do(6ft)2ss, cash ; V.D.L. shingle*, 20s per 1000; spokes, 12s per 100; felloes, from Is 3d each ; boards, 12s Cd per 100 f t; scantlings, 12s 6d per 100 f t; tongned and grooved kauri lining, 18s ; rusticated boards, kanri, 21s ; Gospel Oak galvanised iron, £28 10s per ton. All kind* of building material and blue gum timber are m good supply. Coals (Newcastle) aro 38s to 45s per ton m tho yard. Pirowood is at from 35s to 40a per cord. Firewood (cut), 40s b.p.
