Twertj-twi of Wellington commenced this mori.ing. The Englishmen arrived at eleven o'clock, and immediitrly afterwards drove on to the ground. Tlie weather during the forenoon wm threatening, but m the afternoon it clenred up and the sun was rather warm. There were not more tban 1000 present. The ground wm m good condition, but the wicket appeared a little bumpy. Shaw won the ton, and elected to go to the wickets. Ulyett and Barlow, as usual, were the first to handle the willow against the trundling of Armitage and Baylor. Both baUmen plated cautiously. Alter Uljett had totted up a few runs, he gate Firth, at square- leg, a rather iiifficolt chance, which was not eccepted. Ulyett showed his gratitude by puttiog Barley's nut to tho boundary line. Barlow acted o.i the defensive, Ulyelt gaining the runs. Armilage, after boning a few orers, was relieved by Luxford, who, after fire or ten minutes, had to give way to Hicksin. Bayley from the north end was well on, and few runs were scored off him. After an hour's play 60 appeared on the telegraph board, of which number 36 were contributed by Glyett. On the score reaching 67 Uhett, m playing easily to one of Bayley'», wa» clean bowled. 1 — 43 — 61. Selby joined Barlow, The game was now painfully slow, the bowling being too good to allow of any liberties being taken. When Selby had scored 6, be drew back ti a shooter from Eajley, and hit hi* wicket. 2—5—67. Bates followed. Sereral maidens were now lent down m succession, and. with the total ot 76, Barlow was neatly taken at the wickets by Mice. 3 — 20—76. Shrewsbury filled the vacancy, and at once started the field leitber bunting. The bowling was (hanged at South'* end sereral times, but without the desired effect. Bates was giving the field lomo trouble, until he gay« Barton at mid-on a clianoe, which ha eagerly accepted. 4-24—123. Midwinter ji.ined Shrewsbury, but before scoring, was taken by Firth at long-flip. Scotlon now came m, and the field were kept pretty lirely, the latter acting on tbodefeniiro, while Shrewsbury was hitting all round. - Shrewsbury drove one of Bayley'* intoArmitagn's bands at loDg-off, but it bopped out again. Shrewsbury and Scot ton kept their wickels up until lime was called, the score then standing at 176 for the lots of only fire wickeU. Shewsbury had been at the wicktts three boars, and Scotton two. 7 he Wellington fielding was fairly good, and the bowling of Bayley, who bowled from the north end all the afternoon, was greatly admired.
