Alexander Wilkie, mate of tbe brigantine Eliza Mary, was drowned last night, lie was escorting a drunken seaman aboard when both slipped from the planks connecting the vessel and the wharf. The seaman w,is picked up at once, but Wilkio was nowhere to be seen, and his body is not yet recovered. The sculling match at Mercury Bay for LIOO was won by Carter. Time, 22 minutes ; distance, 3i miles. Carter and Whitn on this occasion exchanged boats, as the latter was of opinion his opponent's previous victory was more due to the boat he pulled m than to his rowing powers. The result, however, proved the erroneousnes of White's views. In the Auckland province IG9 candidates presented themselves at the teachers' examination for certitioates. Tawhaio and party left for Rewiti, Kaipara, where they will be entertained by the residents. The natives will stay two days, and then return to Auckland. The valuer reports the erection of 228 new buildings m Auckland during the year. Mastertox, Jan. 25. A man named Ford fell off hie hone last night and was killed. He had beea drinking. ■Wellington, Jan. 25. 173 runs, comprising 2,309,217 acres of Crown lands, m Otago, will be offered fv>r leasa by public auction on Monday. A fire broke out m a store formerly occupied by E. W. Mills, m Hunter street. The Brigade were quickly on the spot, and extinguished the conflagration, before much damage was done. The origin, at present is unknown. Chuistchukch, Jan. 25. The expenditure on the Christchurch Hospital during the last half-year has been L 2274 11s lid, and m charitable aid L 4121 33 Id. The total expenditure of the Hospital and Charitable Aid Board amounted to L 8127 Is 53, the receipti being L 377 2s 9J. The Board have written to Government asking them to petition the Admiralty for a training ship for the colony, to be stationed at Lyttelton. At the sitting of tha Wesleyan Conference, the report of the Home Mission and Church Extension Committee, stated that the income {»r the ye»r wa* L 2437 J2s Id, and expenditure, L 2534 10* 3d. Ashbl'rtox, Jan. 25. A verdict of death from natural causes was returned at tho inquest on the man Thomas, who w.is found dead m bed at Barr Hill on Sunday last. A man named James Fowler waa brought up to-day, charged with the abduction of a young girl, named Lucy Haines, from her parents' keeping. Her parents, who reside at Alfurd Forest, had received a letter from tho girl, who is fifteen years and nine months old, stating sho had married the prisoner, but this ho denied. Ho was remanded to permit of evidence being obtained. At the inquest on John Brown, a settler living near Ashburton, who committed suicide by hanging yesterday, a verdict of self destruction whilst m a' (It of temporary insanity was returned at tho inquest to-day. A conference of delegates of the County and Borough Councils was held to-day, and it was decided t.i obtain local administration of charitable aid. The weather is beautifully fine, and the crops will not suffer from tho late rain. Tho harvest prospects ar« very fair. j A Catholic bazaar opened m the Town Hall on Thursday lait, was closed last night. At a special meeting of the Cabinet tho suggestions and recommendations of the Otago Waste Lands Board m reference to the proposals of Government respecting the Otago runs were carefully considered and discussed at much length. It was ultimately decided to adopt all the recommendations of the Board, and at a meeting of the Executive Council, the Governor presiding, these were formally adopted and confirmed by Order-in-Council. This will be publicly notified immediately. The Premier, who is travelling overland, reached Hawera to-day, and goes on to New Plymouth to-night. He will probably proceed thence to Manukauhy the steamer McGregor, instead of waiting for the mail boat on Monday.
