Sadfield (native interpreter) would have been seriously injured if not killed. Wellington, Nov. 18. Acceptances for the Wellington Spring Handicap close on Monday at eight. The Directors of the WellingtonManawatu railway have concluded all their preliminary arrangements, and today concluded the terms of their agreement with Government. The3e are of a highly tatisfactory nature. The Company's solicitor is instructed to draw up the formal contract on the terms settled. The terminus of the line is to bo at Longburn, about four miles from Palmerston North, this being found a much preferable route to the Fulton one. Government do not require any security from the Company beyond an undertaking to expend L 50.000 within the first year, heing content beyond this to rely on the powers given by clause 123 nf the Railway* Construction Act. Five years is allowed to complete the line. The allocation of land has been 6xed between Government and the company and the valuation made. The line will be eighty-two milei m length, and the Company is entitled to L 123.000 worth of land. A recent Government survey of the proposed main line through Manawatu Gorge shows it can be completed for about LIO,GOO per mile, or L 90.000 from Palmerstnn to Woodville. As between Napier and Wellington, this line will be tiiirtv-three miles »hort.-r than the line from Napier through Wairarap3. The financial arrangements to enable the Company to commence work at once will likely be completed m a few days. Gbevmotjih, Nov. 18. A storekeeper at Barrytowu, named Mcllroy, while shooting a bullock to-day had his left hand blown off by the gun bursting. A poll was taken to-day on the subject of borrowing L 20.000 for a waterworks scheme proposed by the City Council. Great opposition has been manifested to the proposal which, however, meets with general favor from the Press. A man promenaded the town calling on people to vote against it, and the opponents of the measure were very active m their endeavors to work up an agitation against the proposal. The result was, it was rejected by 463 against 832. Dunedik, Nov. 18. A seaman named Alfred Palmer, of the Rio Grande, has been arrested, charged with wounding the boatswain of the same vessel. The two had quarrelled, and Palmer, who was about to take his dinner, had a knife and fork m his hand, and m the scuffle the knife struck Carlson, the boatswain, m the Bide. Two children are reported as having died at Wanaka through eating unripe fruit. A man named Lenniway ii supposed to have been drowned m Catlin'i River. He wa» sailing m a flat-bottomed boat with a companion, when it filled. Lenniway swam to the shore, and has not uinca been heard of. His mate was picked up very exhausted.
