[Pee Press Association.] Auckland, April 27. On the arrival of the City of Sydney, he Hon. Fred. Whitaker and Messrs Gill, Clarke (Mayor), Seymour, George (M.H.R.s), and several ladies, who had known Lady Gordon at Fiji or m Auckland, proceeded m the Customs launch to meet her ladyship. Laiy Gordon, who with the Misses Gordon, Oapt. Knollya (A. James Coburn and Thomas Parr, two seamen, were charged at Lytteltnn to-day with broaching cargo ou board the Mataura while on the passage from London to Lyttelton. After a large amount of evidence had been taken, which tended to prove that broaching had been carried on almost the whole length of the voyage, and that to reach the cargo they had to pass over the powder magazine with candles, the case was adjourned m order to obtain the evidence of some passengers m defence. Messrs Austin, Kirk and Co. intend to compete for the Government bonus of L 250 for the first thousand pounds' worth of household pottery. Tlio Acclimatisation Society have remonstrated with Government on the high' price of licenses for killing hares, which cost 20s each. Oajiabu, April 27. A man named Sutherland jumped off the southern goods train to-day while m motion, and dislocated his shoulder. The County Council intend erecting offices, and lately offered a bonus of L2O for an approved plan. There were seven competitors, the plan of Mr J. Johnston being accepted. The Raceconrse Trust intend communicating with the Government, with the view of having the racecourse reserve Crown-grauted to the Trust. Donedin, April 27. Young Garrett, who was injured m the tramway accident has not yet recovered consciousness.
