[Per " Timaru Herald " Special Wire.] Auckland, Oct. 12. The Borough of -Parnell has presented its Mayor with a silver cradle, m honor of an addition to his family. Certain Justices of the Peace deputationed Mr Whitaker, asking that the SubInspector of Police should be restored to his former position of Sergeant- Major. Mr Whitaker promised to refer the matter to Wellington. A Sergeant m plain clothes shortly commences enforcing the compulsory clauses of the Education Act. Captain Purves, of H.M.S. Danae, has received a telegram from Commodore Wilson, instructing him to leave Auckland on the 18th inßt. for Fiji. It is probable the Danae will bring the new Governor. The recent gold discoveries are m a block of 7000 acres allotted as a native reserve. The Government hai taken no steps to verify the discovery. The yacht Peace capsized off Kauri Point, and a boy named Day was drownod. There was near being another fire m Onehunga yesterday, which was fortunately checked before it gained headway. It waß also close to Roe's saw-mills, and broke out m the shingled roof of the Government buildings kuown as the Native Hostelry. A hole was completely burnt through the roof before the fire was extinguished. The origin of this fire is, too, attributed to sparks from the sawmill. ' At a meeting of the creditors m .the estate of Captain Kenneth Kerr, the liabilities were stated to be L 2244. The only asset is a n-versiuuary interest m England worth L4OOO. The interest, however, it is stated, the debtor assigned to his wife about eighteen months ago. By the R.M.S. Australia arrived Lord Abbott Alcock, the Rev. Mr Fox, and some lay brothers belonging to the Dominican Order, who have come to found an astablishment m connection with the Order m Auckland. Wellington, Oct. 12. Mr Mansford, R.M., has received 12 months' leave of absence and visits England. It is understood that ho will draw f i ' pay. It is stated that a strong party of men, organised under an experienced leader, have started for the Terawhiti district to give it a fair trial under the most approved principles of working and saving tine gold. The Lingards opened m " Stolen Kisses " last night to a crowded house. The amateurs who played " Pinafore " last week have tendered a complimentary benefit to Mis* Leaf. The piece selected is " Pinafore," and the performance will take place on the quarter-deck of the •hip St. Leonards, now loading for London. A lunatic named ' Walsh escaped from the Asylum thin morning. He is still at •large. Hokitika, Oct. 12. Andrew Ross, ferryman at the Mikonui river, was drowned thU morning while crossing it with two pack-horses loaded. He was. riding one horse, sitting behind the paok-saddle, and m the middle of the largest stream the load shifted, and it is supposed he was thrown suddenly into the river. There was a fresh at the time, and the current was strong. His body was found about 6 p.m. Deceased was a pensioner of the Royal Navy. Ohristohueoh, Oct. 12. A man ejected from the White Hart Hotel last night, used a knife upon the landlord and night porter, inflicting flesh wounds. He was brought up at the Court to-day, but the case was remanded. A letter having appeared m one of the papers referring to the rumored change of Magistrates, and reflecting on Mr Boawick's capacity and impartiality, a number of the Bar and residents to-day took occasion at the Rangiora, R. M. Court to disavow any sympathy with the opinions expressed. Mr Beswick was sitting on the Bench. About 10 o'olock last night the shop of Samuel Steward, pawnbroker, which is part of his dwelling-house, was broken into by the shutters and front window being smashed. Five gold watches and a gold brooch, which were hanging m the window, valued about L6O were stolen. The thieves decamped before they could be seen, but information was speedily given to the police. About ten minutes to 12' Constable Dungan, who was on duty m Oxford Terrace West, near Montreal street, heard a woman calling for the police. He went round to tho back of Messrs Medley and Walker's premises, and found that the kitchen window of Medley's house had been broken, and that three coats, hanging m the kitchen, had been stolen. From what he gathered, he went to an outhouse near at hand, and found three men apparently sleeping m the loft. ' One of the stolen coats was found near them, and he arrested the three on a charge of burglary and entering the dwelling named. After leaving the men at the depot, he returned to the premises, where he found a b'ucuit tin containing the watches and broooh. The men were brought up at the Police Court this morning, and remanded till Monday. Captain Barry attempted to give a lecture m the Gaiety Theatre to-night, but the audience interrupted him and pelted him with eggs till he was forced to retreat. Oamaeu, Oct. 12. The first engine crossed the Maerewhenua bridge to-day, and entered Duntroon without ceremony. It is only the other day since the Duntroon — Hakateremea line was commenced, and it is being pushed forward with expedition by tho contractors. Dpnbdin, Oot. 12. At the Sussex Hotel last night Mr E. Wilson, late of tho Railway Departmsnt, was presented with a gold medal and a purse of fifty sovereigns, m acknowledgement of the part he took m the recent agitation re reduced pay. The Education Board at a special meeting carried the following resolution : — " That the Board having been informed that out of a vote for school buildings of L 50,000 the Minister for Education has only allocated Otago L6OOO, it desires to protest m the strongest possible terms against this allocation as being an act of injustice to Otago. The Board also desires to draw the attention of the Minister to the fact, that it has under its charge one-fourth of all the school children m the colony, and is entitled to a very much larger proportion of rate; also, that for the last three years it has been placed m a much worse position than any other Board m the colony m regard to sums allocated to it for school buildings. Further, the Board considers the present system of providing and diitributing funds for school buildings extremely unsatisfactory, and they are of the opinion that the power for raising sums necessary for school buildings by local rate 3 should be conferred by Parliament on the local bodies, ands.uch sums be supplemented pro rata by the central Government." This last resolution was carried with the distinct understanding that a sufficient sum should be voted by Parliament m the first place, to put school districts on an equal footing. The unanimous opinion expressed was if justice is not done to the district, the wisest course for the Board would be to resign, and throw all responsibility on the Government. Jnveroargill, Oct. 12. A fire at Wyndhiim destroyed a stable and a number of outhouses. By a fire at J. B. Sutton's farm, Garryowen, a large stable, together with a prize bull and the stallion Pablo Fanque, were destroyed.
