Kennedy, requesting the uso of the schoolroom on Friday evening, November 7th, for tho purpose of giving an entertainment by tho "South Canterbury Troubadours," consisting of Christy Minßtrcl songs, &c., to conclude with a ball, a competent quadrille band being provided. The request was granted. A letter was read from tho Pareora Library Committeo, requesting the uso of tho room for library purposes ; also, that spaco might bo allowed for a book case. Granted. . Tho following resolutions wero passed — " That a. holiday bo granted -on tho Show day." " That Messrs J. Campbell and J. Bell be empowered to get the loose soil left about the building removed and lovellcd, and the entrance re-formed and shingled." Messrs R. Campbell and G. Carter was charged by J. Lowo with assaulting him. It appeared from tho c'vi'lence' that the plaintiff had shot a dog belonging to the defendant, and on the latter going to the plaintiffs honso about it a row had ensued, the defendant striking the plaintiff first. The accused was fined 1b and costs. H. Bromley, charged with being drunk and disorderly, and who was on bail, did ' not appear when called, and was fined 20s and costs. Civil ' cases— Smytho v. ' fi. " JJroivn (Treasurer of th'o 1.0. G.T. Lodge, nt Tcmuka) — Claim, £9, for preparing plans and acting ns clerk of works in' building : thc (Jood Templar Hall. Mr Johnston appeorod for tho defendant. Bcctham, Esq., R.M., William Bontly Nightingale was brought up m charge of Sergeant Burtenshaw, of Albury, charged witli the larceny of a pnir of, boots from a man named Smith at the Silverstream Hotel. Itappeared from tho evidence that the prisoner went into the houso, found a pair of boots there, and took them away with him. Information was given to tho polico, and ho was arrested and. brought, to Timaru. Captain Fraser put his ridiculous question about tho "express rate ofspeed" tho trains on tho Wellington and Featherston railway. Wo showed yesterday tho utter absurdity of tho allegations made by tho timid captain, and wo aro not surprised that the matter was treated more, as a joke than anything else by tho Council, although Mr Watorhouso could not resist tho temptation to do a little " croaking." Colonel Whitmore stated with porfect truth that oven If tho trains did not run fast they wero porfectly safo. Wo proved this yesterday by detailing tho results of actual experiment, and wo may add that the recent improvement m tho rolling stock havo rendered it porfecLly safo to travel on our railway at any attainable speed if circumstances should make it desirable to do bo. . ...
