[Per " Timaku Herald " SrEciAt, Wire.] Auckland, June 9. At the quarterly meeting of the Journeymen Baker's Association held on Saturday evoning, the statement of accounts showed a credit balances of LUG 15a. News has been received here of the death of Colonel Arney, a brother of the late Chief Justice. He sei'vad a long time m New Zealand and was present at the Hauraki fight. A boy named Alfred Walker, son of Constable Walker,Bhothimself accidentally on Saturday at Mercer. His elder brother, who is about 12 years of age, took down his father's revolver and was playing with it, not being aware that two of the chambers were loaded. His younger brother wished to have it, and tried to take it from him, and m doing so he touched the trigger and the charge went off. The balls entered his abdomen below the navel. He was brought to the hospital on Saturday night and remains m a critical condition. A child of the woman Hart, who was recently prosecuted for child destroying, was found dead this morning m bed. Apparently it had been smothered, and an inquest will probably be held. To-day an inquest was held at the Hospital on tho body of Thomas Recce, who was killed at the fire at the Manukau Hotel, on Saturday morning. The cause of death was evidently a stroke from a brick, hurled by the explosion of the water-tank. His skull was found to be very much fractured, and the jury returned a verdict of accidental death. A fire broke out last Saturday, m the general store of H. B. Morton, m Customs Btreet, the contents of the store being wholly destroyed. The total insurances on Morton's and other buildings destroyed, are as follows : —In the South British, LJOOO ; Royal, L 1000; Hew Zealand, L 100 0; Victoria, L 100 0; Northern Assurance, L 100 0; Union, LSOO. Wellington, June 9. The head of the Good Templars here has written a highly complimentary letter to Hiscock and Hayman respecting the play "Ten Nights m a Bar Room." The amount to be advanced by the Bank of New Zealand on account of the LIOO,OOO Municipal Loan is LIO.OOO. The Governor will probably leave for Auckland about Thursday. Some excellent specimens of goldbearing quartz are said to have been obtained within the city, and have been exhibited to-day. Notice is gazetted of a private Bill to amend the Swamp Nuisance Act. Westport, June 9. An eight-ounce nugget was found m Lyell's Creek on Thursday. The Bishop of Nelson has purchased two sections at Lyell for the purpose of building a church. The United Alpine Company last week obtained 2350Z3. of gold from 80 tons of stone. Up to Saturday, 521 tons of stone had been crushed, giving 7890z5. of gold. The final^cleaning up takes place on Friday next. Christchurch, June 9. A woman named Mrs Low, living m Lyttelton, fell down n|bank at the back of her house on Saturday last and broke both bones of her left leg above the ankle. Despite the complaints of the want of employment, one of the Resident Magistrates near Christchurch has had occasion to remark from the Bench that there had been no diminution m the cases of drunks which had come before him. In Christchurch drunken men are to be seen as frequently as ever. Yesterday, m broad daylight, three or four men were to be seen m a very drunken state m certain parts of the town. A man named Frost was admitted to the Hospital on Saturday morning with a

fractured thi^h, caused by his horse jamming him between two trees and throwing him. Oamaru, June 9. An enquiry wa3 held before Mr Parker, Coroner, to-day, into the cause of the firo discovered m Lipperts' (grocer) simp, Thame3 street, on the 4th instant. The enquiry was instituted by the New Zealand, Victoria, and the Colonial Insurance Companies. The evidence of four witnesses was taken, but nothing nwtc;ri;il could be elicited, and the jury returned an open verdict. Lipperta stated that the fire must have been caused by mice nibbling the heads off matches, the fire communicating m the first iastance with their nests. Not much damage was done by the fire. ■ The correct insurances on tho fire m Wan3beck street on Sunday mornare a3 follows : — Buildings, L4OO iv the New Zealand Offico ; Larkin's stock, L3OO m the South British, and Ll5O re - insured m the London, Liverpool, and Globo ; Moir's stock, LISOO m the South British, L 250 being re-insured m the Colonial ; Tudhope and Hondry's, L2OO m tho South British. Moir and Son had only lately reduced the amount of their policy from LBOO to LSOO. An assistant-bailiff, named Hoskins, was charged at the Resident Magistrate's Court to-day with stealing some goods which had been left m his possession while m the discharge of his duty. He was remanded. Dunedin, June 9. At St. Joseph's Church yesterday Bishop Moran mentioned that a tender for the fir3t portion of work connected with the cathedral had been accepted, the amount being L 3970. The total amount of subscriptions received up to tho present time was L2GBI. The amount of the sum fir3t promised was L 3,500, and the second L 2700, making a total of L 6200. The sum of L2GBl l4s 6d had been paid, and the balance could be paid at the congregation's convenience. As soon as the funds were exhausted it was intended to stop work.

The very numerous friends of Mr Alex. McLean (of the firm of McLean Bros., stock and station agents, of this city), will regret to hear of that gentleman's death which took place yesterday very suddenly. In the morning Mr McLean was m tho best of health and spirits, and left town m company wilh Mr Todd, tho Balclutha representative of that firm, for the purpose of taking a drive along the Ocean Beach. Whilst proceeding along the Beach towards the Forbury, Mr Todd observed Mr McLean fall suddenly back, and finding that he had lost all control over the reins, called to Mr Stavely, who had just passed, and with his assistance had Mr McLsan removed to the Pacific Hotel. Mr McLean did not again speak. Dr Hockin who was sent for, arrived shortly afterwards and stated that there had been a rupture of a blood vessel near the heart, causing instantaneous death. Mr McLean was unmarried and about forty years of age. It has been decided unnecessary to hold an inquest. The Yen. Archdeacon Edward received a communication by the mail on Saturday intimating that Bishop Neville intended to leave England by the Luaitania this month.

By the destruction of their kiln and damage done by water on Saturday Messrs Royse, Stead, and Co. lose LI2OO. The firm are largely insured m several offices.

The engineering establishment of Mr A. McDonald, at Milton, was totally destroyed by fire on Saturday. The building and engine were insured m the Standard for L 420, and m the Manchester Company for LIOO.

A rumor is current that the tender of Messrs Walter Bell and Company has been accepted for the reclamation m connection with the Dunedin Railway-station site, the amount being £18,000.
