RESIDENT MAGISTRATE'S COURT.

TIMARU.— Mondat, June 9th. (Before R. Beetbam, Esq., E.M.) DBUNKENNBSS. An inebriate, pleading guilty to this'charge, was fined 6b. BESIBTINO THE POLICB. J. Hales and T. Underwood were charged with disorderly conduct and resisting ths police. Constable Stephenson stated that the prisoners were creating a great disturbance m Beswick Btreet on Saturday night. They refused to de6ist when requested, therefore witness and another constable took them into custody, prisoners violently resisting. Both prisoners contrition for their folly, and tliis being their first offence, His Worship dnilt leniently with them, fining, them 40a each, and cautioning them as to their future conduct. Underwood was fined a further rum of 6s for using obpeene language BREACH OF BOBOUGH BYE-LAWS. Charles Mass9y, for allowing a mare and foal, and Henry NkHollb, for allowing a foal, to wander at large m the town, were each fined 5s and costs. PAIMNO TO PROVIDE. Willinm T. Todd was charged on remand with failing to provide lawful necessaries for his wife and four children. Prisoner had been remanded to allow of his wife reccnering from illnees sufficiently to attend Ihe Court. Inspector Ponder and Dr Hammond stated that she was still too weaV to attend, and was, indeed, m a precarious slate. Catherine Cook, a neighbor, staled that she had been attending to Mrs Todd, and had supplied her with all the food she received during her illness. She bad teen Todd during that lime, and he was always intoxicated on I ho*e occasions.

Prisoner said he wos a carpenter, but had been out of work for the last six weska. He liad been working at A] bury, and had offered to allow his wife 30s a week. Hsgave her £10 on the 2nd May last.

Inspector Pender said the prisoner's conduct wob due to his having given way to drink.

His Worship said that any man who would conduct himself as prisoner had done, while his Jwifo was ill and m want of food, was a brute, undeserving of the name of man. He regretted that the law did nol provide for the punishment by imprisonment of such as he. He would order him to pay 30s a week, and if it were not paid regularly, ha would be imprisoned for the default. CIVII. CASES. Brownell r. Lee— Claim for wi ful damage. Mr Perry for plaintiff, and Mr White for defendant, having agreed to adjourn the case, it was adjourned accordingly. Judgment by default, with costs, was given m the following cases : — Jonas, Hart, and Wildie — Claim £13 17i 4d ; O. Opie v. Allen— Claim, £30 17s 7d, dishonored promissory note, Mr Perry for plaintiff; A. S. Levy t. Wrigg — Claim 6s ; B. Hibbird t. J. W. Jones— £l4 12s Bd. M. Salek t. H. Whittaker— Claim, £1 16» Bd, for goods supplied. Defendant put m a set-off for £1 14a sd, and denied having received some of the goods for which be was charged. Plaintiff rot having brought evidence to prove delivery, and declining to accept an adjournment on the usual terms, the case was struck ont.

J. E. Beckingham v. Coleman — Clsim, £5 ss. Judgment summons. Plaintiff »aid defendant was earning at least £3 a week at Cliff's mill, and bad offered to pay 10s per week. defendant said he was willing to pay 5a a week j he could not afford to pay more. His Worship ordered him to pay 7s 6d per week, or m default fourteen, days' imprisonment.

A. St. G. Hamersley r. Farkerson. His Worship was to have given judgment m this case, but further adjourned doing bo until this morning.
