ROAD BOARDS.

MOUNT PEEL. A meeting of the above Board was held m the .Road Board office, Peel Forest, on Friday, 3rd January. The annual meeting of ratepayers had been previously held. The newly-elected members (the Hon. J. Barton A. Acland, Messrs C. Q-. Tripp and J. Henly) were present. ELECTION OF CHAIRMAN. The Board proceeded to elect a Chairman, when it proposed by Mr Tripp, seconded by Mr Heney, and carried—" That the Hon. J. B. A. Acland be elected Chairman for the present year." MINUTBB. The minutes of the previous meeting were then read and confirmed. BOTODABIBB OF BIDIHOS. Reßolved— " % That the Clerk write to the Colonial Secretary, requesting him to forward a copy of the Government Gazette containing a description of the boundaries of the ridings of the Geraldine County, more especially the boundaries of the Raukapuka and Mount Peel ridings." BEPAIBS TO HO ADS. A recommendation having been received from the meeting of ratepayers, that the crOBS road m Peel Forest should be shingled, it was resolved — " That tenders be invited for the work ; to be sent mat the next meeting of the Board." A letter was read from Messrs Cook and Baine, calling the 'attention of the Board to some necessary repairs required upon the road between the south and north branches of the Opuha river ; also requesting that the road running through sections 28,868 and 28,369 be formed. The Overseer was instructed to see Mr Baine, and inspect the roads, and invite tenders for the necessary improvements. The Overseei was also direoted to inspect the embankment on the main road through Peel Forest, near Walter's hut, and to invite tenders for widening the same and otherwise improving the road and to attend to two cnlvert« on the HoHnt Peel road. ADJOURNMENT. The meeting then adjourned till the third Friday m February. MOUNT COOK. A meeting of the Mount Cook Road Board was held at Burkes Pa9a, on Monday, the 6th of January, 1879. From Mr Me Allister, drawing the Board's attention to the danger of Opawa Hotel being washed away m consequence of overflow of Opawa River. — The Engineer was instructed to report upon the same at next meeting of the Board. From the Chairman of Fuirlie Creek School Committee requesting the Board to form a road leading to the school site at Fairlie Creek — The Engineer was instructed to re port upon the same at next meeting. From Mr N. Radone, applying to have the Mistake Road repaired. Resolved — "That the Engineer be empowered to send surface men to do necessary repairs." From H. Welsh, requesting the Board to cover m the south-west side of Fairlie Creek pound, and make a loft for hay." Resolved — "That tenders be called for the aame m accordance with the plans uud specifications made out laßt year." From the Land Tax Commissioner, Cliristchurch, requesting a copy of the valuation roll, and asking the Board to recommend a valuer for the district. Resolved — " Thnt he be informed that the Board will furnish him with a copy of the new valuation roll when the same is completed." From the Survey office, Chris tehurch, requesting to know what steps have been taken to define the boundary line between the Levels and Mount Cook -Road Districts. From Mr J. Stevenson, asking for a road through the Mackenzie Pass right to the Braemar. Resolved — " That the Board cannot at present entertain Mr Stevenson's request." BETUBNING OPHCEB. From Mr G-. F. Clulee, resigning his Returning Officership. Resolved — " That Mt Marchant be appointed Returning Officer." BOIIOITOBB TO THE BOABD. Resolved — " Tnat Messrs Godby and Tosswill be requested to act as the retained solicitors of the Board." PUKAKI FBEET. Resolved — " That as the Pukaki ferryman has unlawfully left his post without appointing anyone to take his place, the matter be placed m the hands of the Board's solicitors." Resolved — " That the Chairman and mover (Mr Spalding) be appointed a Committee to take the necessary steps m the matter of the Pukaki ferry." A GBAOBJUL ACKNOWLEDGMENT. A letter was read from the contractors under the Board relative to Mr Clulee's leaving the Board's Bervice, and enclosing the following ; — " The Chairman Mount Cook Road Board. —Sir — The resignation of Mr G. F. Clulee as Surveyor to the Board, see ms to us a fit time to acknowledge the very great satisfaction we have enjoyed m executing the numerous contracts, which have been entrusted to us under his superintendence. His courtesy and equitable dealing m business have been so uniformly fair that his early departure from office is a matter of regret. Wishing him health, happiness, and prosperity m his worldly pursuits, we beg to subscribe our names* as under. (Signed) Robeit Forgan, Risk and Markham, John Corkery, Michael Corkery, Gibson and Campbell." INTERVIEW. Mr. Jefcoate interviewed the Board about his inability to procure metal for his contract through Burnett's land. Reßolved— "That the Board cannot interfere m the mutter, and that he be instructed to proceed with his contract." MISCELLANEOUS. Resolved — "That the Engineer report on the necessary drainage on Mountnessing road at the next meeting." Resolved — " That tenders for forming and metalling of Little Opawa road be mby next meeting." Resolved — " That tenders be called for repairs to the road m the Horse-shoe Bend, near Three Springs." Resolved— "That the Engineer report upon the necessary workaatthe crossing of the Opihi river, at the mouth of Burkes Pass, and furnish an estimate for taking the read on the east side of the river." Resolved — " That tenders be called for additions to the Board's house at Burkes Pass, m accordance with the Engineer's plan." PATHSHTS. Accounts were past for payment amounting to £2706 Is sd. VALUATION BOIi. Resolved—" Th»t Mr H. D. MoPherson be informed that it is absolutely necessary he should hasten on with the preparation of the valuation roll of the Mount Cook District." The meeting then terminated. TEMTJXA. ANNUAL MEETING OF BATBPAYBBS. After the election of members for the Temuka Road Board had taken place on Tuesday, Dr Rayner was elected chairman of the publio meeting, on the motion of Mr Brown. There was a large attendance, and a great number of questions were put to the members of the Road Board. Mr Brown asked for a return of the amount collected as rates, and also for a return of the expenditure within the town daring the part year. The Clerk »teted that about £1100 had

The following amendment was then moved by Mr R. Baker, and seconded by Mr A. Ensor— " That the Road Board be requested to call a public meeting to consider the question of dividing the district into wards." The amendment was carried.
