The Chkistohubch-Dtjnbdik Railway. —We have nason to believe that ordinary traffic on the through line to Dunedin will be opened on Saturday next. A Mysterious Affaib. — About a month ago a certain married woman, living near Timaru, who nets us a nur-e, received a letter from a person ii Lyitelton asking her if she could take m Mrs to be confined. The very samo night Mrs drove up to *he dnor, and much to the inconvenience of the nurse, was taken m. Ike child was bjrn, and the mother remained at the house for some days. One afternoon, however, she went into town and. was never afterwards seen or heard of. The baby still remains on the nurse's hnnds,|who doe? not know what to do with it. The mother left without making any provision for it, although from all appearances she was well provided with money, and belonged to something above the ordinary class of people. We understand tlmt the nurse, after waiting over a fortnight expecting 1o hear from her or from the man who wrote m the first instance from Lyttelton, placxd the matter m the hands of (he police, who will probably have little difficulty m tracing tho mother of tha child, and causing her to resume charge of her helpless inlant. Local Industry. — We yesterday had the pleasure of inspecting a very handsome specimen of local induntry, m the shape of a barouche, just completel by Mr John Barratt, of the Criterion Coach Factory, Timaru, for Mr J. W. While. It will accommodate easily and comfortably, six people inside, and three on the. box. Its trimmings are of drab Bilk tabbaret, with broad silk drab lace. It \b painted olive-green, picked out black, with fine while lines. The body is what is called i anoe shaped, and is furnished with a hood which will completely protect those inside. The inside is very neatly cushioned, and can be entered from either side. The whole turn-out is of a description which ciuld not bo improved upon anywhere else m the colony, and reflects the very highest credit on Mr Barratt. We would advise those who are al troys so ready to cry down local manufnetures, and to go to Christchurch or Dunedin for carriages and suchlike things, to inspect this barouche, as We feel confident it will effect a considerable revolution m t.heir opinions of Timaru workmanship We may mention thai rereral persons b longing to Oamaru and Ohristchurch, who have inspected the baroucho, are so pleased with it that they have given Mr Barratt orders for vehicles of one sort or another. Opening of the Railway. — At a meeting of the Reception Committee, held yesterday, arrangements were made for giving a reception lo his Excellency the Governor and Members of the General Assembly, on their arrival m Timaru on the occasion of (he •pening of the railway to Dunedin. About 100 visitors are expected, and it has been arranged to erect two triumphal arches, one m front of the verandah of the railway station, and the other to span George-street, m front of the door of tha Club Hotel. Owing to the shortness of the time they are to Btay here, considerable difficulty was experienced m determining upon the best means of receiving them. It was, however, ultimately agreed upon to give the visitors a drive around the town, and for that puiposo all tho traps available, both private and public have been angnged. The visitors will be met on their arrival at the railway station, where sn address will bo presented to his Excellency the Governor. The traps will I hen be brought into requisition, and they will be driven up the Main North Koad, down Strathailanstreet, and up Cain's Terrace to the Gro»venor Hotel, where an adjournment will be made for refreshments. They will then start for Ibe Hospital by the way of the Main South Road ; turn np Queen street to tho Town Belt, thence by tho Catholic Church, turning , up North - street, and entering the school grounds by Ibe back gateway from Grey-street. Here tho children will be mustered and regaled with such refreshments as will best please their infantile-"** fancies. After an inspection of the school, the visitors will be driven back by way of North-street, Barnard-street, Sophia-street, Church-street, and down* the Mam North Rood to the railway station. The Fire Brigade are to attend, and also the volunteers, who very probably will form a guard of honor to the Governor. The time m which all this has to bednneis limited to 40 minutes. Railway Benefit Society. — A deputation, consisting of Messrs Veoner, Spencer, Valcy, and Bain, waited upon aduly convened meeting of the local members last evening to consider their interests. Mr Biackmore was m the chair. The Chairman called upon the Secretary, Mr Valpy, to explain the status of the Society, which that gentleman did to the complete satisfaction of the meeting. A local Committee was afterwards elected, consisting of Messrs Townson, Biackmore, Binskin, Wraight, Kneeshaw, Moles, Gould, Foster, Bracefield, and Coin. The general meeting thereupon adjourned, and the Committee met for the transaction of routine business. Theatre Royal.— Timaru Theatre-goers > will doubtless be glad to learn that tbe Theatre Royal will be opened this evening by a first class dramatic company, with two most popular pieces, namely, the " Ticket-of-Leave Man," and " o'Calla.gban on his last Legs." Many of the company are well known here, and need no pra;Ee to recommend them to a Timaru audience. Amongst those, we may mention Mr Oily Deering, who may be reckoned amongst the best, if not the best all-round actor on tbe colonial stage, and also Messrs Herbert e and Stoneham, two rising young artistes of much promise. Mr H. E. Walton comes to us a complete stranger, bat

ht-mlded by a namo that leads us to expect great tilings from him, and so far as we can learn from our eichanges, there is every proßpect that our expectations will be fu'.ly realised. Mr Walton has been characterised as on odor of great originality, and Ihj representation of " O'Calliighan on his Last Leg?," is said to bo the best seen on the colonial (jtago, since tlio days of G. V. Brooke. The fact that Mrs Fitzwilliams hails from tho Haymarket Theatre, ought to bo sufficient reeommfn<lation, bul iiidei'Ondci.t of tlmt. we find her highly p.'aised by tho Now Zealand Pres', wherever blio has appeared. Wo have no doubt but that a rare treat wi'l be presented this evening, m the Theatre. Koyiil, and we would strongly recommend tho admirers of the histrionic art, not to miss it. Tickets car. ba lind, and seats engaged, ut tho Theatre Eoyal, whoro th« b:>x office will bo open from 10 a.m. till <t |>,m.
