[Per Press Agency.] Napier, Sept. 3. The places of business were closed this afternoon, m consequence of the people going holiday making to Farndon to witness the football match between Gisborne and Napier. It was won by Napier by 4 points to nothing. Gisborne had a much heavier team, but nothing near so active a3 the Napier one. Wellington, Sept. 3. The Governor andhis Private Secretary, MrLePatoujwl, left for Lyttelton at 11 this morning m H. M.S. Nyinphe. It is intended to do the trip under sail if possible. Christchcjrch, Sept. 3. At the licensing meeting to-day, a considerable nvfinber of wine and beer licenses were granted, mostly m the cases of restaurants. A license to the A 1 Hotel was again refused, althoqgh it was stated the hotel would be finished m ten days. The Bench expressed an opinion that there had been great delay. J. M. Cooper, lafcd of the Empire Hotel, applied for a license for a house to be builtby him. The application was opposed ; but the Bench stated the license would be granted, if the premises when completed were satisfactory. A license was granted for an hotel, at Sutnuer, which when finished will contain 135 rooms. Dunedin, Sept. 3. At the quarterly meeting of the Licensing Court to-day, the question of the desirability of hotel-keeper 3 being allowed to carry on racing sweeps cropped up, and, after discussion, the Bench directed the police to bring up, at the next licensing meeting, a report on the matter. The Licensing Bench complimented the Dunedin publicans, and said that no city m the colony was so well off as this for good and respectably conducted hotels. The Harbor Board to-day resolved — " That the Harbor Board desires to express its sincere regret that the Honorable Mr Reynolds, while Chairman of tho Board, should have expressed himself as he did m his speech on the Harbor Board Bill." A man named Christie, a well known coach-driver at Oiitram, poisoned himself this afternoon,' by taking four ounces of laudanum. An inquest will be held tomorrow. Invercargill, Sept. 3. The Bluff Harbor Board had a busy sitting this afternoon, mostly m Committee. 35 applications for the position of chief pilot of the Bluff were considered, and Captain Georga* Thomson, some time a settler at Forest Hill, but an old sailor, holding high testimonials, was selected for the office, and John McDonald appointed junior pilot. With regard to Professor Blackie's application for a part of the Bluff Harbor endowment, it was resolved that, as some aspersions had been cast upon him, the assurance should bej conveyed to him that the Board was of opinion he was quite justißed m acting as he had done, and it was evident that the misapprehension arose through a mistake m the names. Val Vose, the ventriloq uist 3 and Madame Cora and Company, arrived from Melbourne to-day. They open the Theatre
Royal to-morrow night, play a week, and then go North. Great indignation is felt here at the proposition to construct a railway from Green Hills to Toi Tois. A public meeting has been convened to discuss the question.
