THE KETCH PALMERSTON.
TO THK BDITOH OF THB TIITABtT HERALD. Sir,— We observe m yonr shipping columns you stale " That the lessees of the Government Landing Service sent off a crew yesterday to take charge of tho schooner Palmerston, and a salvage claim will be tbe result." We Ibeg to correct this statement, as the following are the facts : — Owing to an impreßsion generally entertained by the public, that tlicro was a man left on board, either dead or seriously injured, two of our boatmen proceeded onboard early on Monday morning, as soon as the pea would permit them, to render any assistance they could, also with instructions that if no one was on board they were to remain m charge to keep the -vessel secure until t-bey were relieved by a proper crew. They did so, and were relieved, »nd returned on shore m the afternoon. We never had the slightest idea of making any claim for salvage, and any report to that effect has arisen from tome joke amongft tbe men, as no claim could under any circumstances be substantiated or desired by us, and the men, who ran a considerable risk m going off to render assistance, and possibly save life, only expected to be remunerated for services rendered. I am, &c, WirauH AcBXAHD, For the Lessees of the Government landing Service. Timaru, Sept. 3rd.
