THE PRICE OF COALS.
TO TUB EDITOR OP THE TIITAMT HEEALD. Sib,— Canyon inform mo how it is that, whilo coals can bo brought to Lyttolton, sent down hero by rail and delivered at 43s per ton, our local merchants, who got them direct aro charging £3 per ton for them ? Surely it is not to bo supposed that it costs 17s moro to import direct than to get them by way of Lyttolfon and psy 103 or 12j par ton railway freight.
It seems to mo that our local men have entered into a combination to keep the price up, and realise an enormous profit out of Iheui. In doins this, although they make householders suffer, they aro going the right way about to cut their own throats, ruin our direct trade with Newcastle, and play into the hands of Christchurch or liyttelton merchants. I havo good reason to know that a large importer of coals at Lyttelton is about opening a branch business here, with the intention of competing with the Timaru men ; , and should ho do to, there cau be no doubt that by underselling them so greatly, ho will obtain an immense amount of support. I am, &c, HotTSEHOLDEB.
