Auckland, Nov. 28. Mr H. Brett has been declared elected Mayor unopposed. Mr Hurst, the late Mayor, took a farewell of the Council. He goes Home for 12 months. Grahamstown, Nov. 28. At Saturday's meeting of the County Council, Alexander Brodie was re-elected Chairman unanimously. His salary was increased from £200 to £300 a year. The Mayoral election resulted m the return of Dr Kilgour with 350 votes against Renshaw's 282. Quint only polled 12. Wellington, Nov. 28. Two formal protests against the Education Bill wore yesterday handed to the Speaker of the Legislative Council, to be sent to the Governor, through whom they are to be transmitted to the Home authorities. ' The following members protest against the Bill because it fails to provide for any recognition of the Christian religion, or even of the Supreme Being :— Kenny, Richmond, Peter, and Miller. Tho other protest is signed by Hall and Menzies, and objects to the Bill for the same reasons as the others, but gives as an additional ground that tho law is not only absolutely wrong, but is opposed to the general wishes of the people of New Zealand. After a very long sitting, the Jury m the Woodville murder case returned a verdict of wilful murder against Harry Thompson, the mate of the deceased. Greymotjth, Nov. 28. At the annual meeting of the County Council to-day the Chairman and all the Councillors held that under the 54th section of ihe Act the Chairman could retain his seat until November, 1878 ; but, iu' order that no difficulty might hereafter arise, Mr Guinness resigned the Chairmanship, and was unanimously reelected. He then made a financial statement, showing tho receipts since the establishment of tho county to be £11,544, and expenditure £13,180, of which £10,539 was on publio works. The Councillors ' considered that the county system had worked well here, and that financially and otherwise the cohditiou of the county was sound, Christchurch, Nov. 28. The Mayoral ' election resulted somewhat unexpectedly/in favor of Mr Thomson. The voteß were Mr Thomson, 474 ; Mr James Gapes, .461. , Dunedin, Nov. 28; : About five hundred people attended the Show to day. At the Fourth Annual Meeting of the Mbsgiel Woollen Factory the balance showed an available balance of £8706. iA dividend of 8 per cent, was declared j £4000 to be carried to the Reserve Fund, ; and the balance to be otherwise dealt with. ■ The Central Agricultural and Pastoral Show, commenced, to-day, promises; to be a great success. There will be a public half-holiday to-morrow. : Betting on the St. Andrew's Handicap — 5 to 1 against Unknown and Oberon, 4 to 1 against Cloth of Gold, 5 to 1 against Chancellor. Spring Handicap — 2 to 1 against Parthenopceus, 4 to 1 against Ohaucellor and Blue Peter. Bluff, Nov. 28. She sails at 6 p.m. for Duuedin.
