GERALDINE RACES.

Stewards :— Messrs P Tancred, D McKen- - zie, J Kennedy, D Fergusson, M E Heatley, D Clouston,— Judge : Mr J Gramond • Starter, Mr T Wadsworth; Clerk of the " course, Mr & I Thompson ; Clerk of the scales, Mr J Deans; Hon Secretary and Treasurer, Mr W Grimmer. ' Favored by lovely weather, a good course, good arrangements, and plenty of competi- ' tion m the various events, the Geraldine • race meeting of 1872 which came off on 25th ' September, compared extremely well with any ; of its predecessors. The meeting was held m the midst of pretty scenery, about • a mile to the north-east of the township of Geraldine, m an English grass paddock very kindly placed at the disposal of the committee, by Mr T S Tancred. The race course was oval m shape, with a good straight fun m, and an even mile m circuit. . The hurdle-race course was a trifle longer • than the flat-race oourse, it being laid off out-: side the latter. The 'hurdles' consisted of a few panels of stout two railfencing, thoroughly testing the pluck of both horses .and riders. - The ground being only newly laid down m, ' grass and the heavy rain of the previous night, made.the running a little heavy, but with this exception it would be hard to have' found a better course anywhere.' A stockyard conveniently situated, served as a saddling paddock, and m a corner of this enclosure the judge's stand was erected, : The day was a regular gal a. day. m the district, the public, young and old, turning out . m great force onhorseback, m traps, m drays and on foot. Mr Marshall ran a five horse J coach to the course from Temuka, and two or three trap loads of visitors from Timard were also on the ground. Altogether there > could not have been. less than four or -tire ■ hundred persons on the ground. To this con- ' course Mr Young, of the Waihi Croaaing :; Hoteli and Messrs fiae and Goodwin, of . tha j Eangitata Hotel, dignenned. liquid refresh- : ment, while Mr "\Vmianpß of Geraldine kept a confect\on,ery . booth and provided the-, j judge'aand steward's luncheon. requisition, everything passing off m the xaoit orderly manner. We now come to the racing, which comprised seven eveutß, the added money for which amounted to about £100, a very creditable sum to be raised for such a purpose m a Bmall place like Geraldine. For the Maiden seven horses ran, and it was a smartly contested race throughout. The Geraldine Clip was only a match, the third horse being scratched. It proved an easy victory for Kitty Darling, for however good Mr Fraser's horse may be, any other horse to •which he can afford to give a stone and-a-half cannot be up to much. A protest was entered against tho mare m this race, but we have not heard the result of it. The Hurdle race was a good one as between the two first horses The Publicans' Purse was a gift to Border Lad. The Consolation Race was a good race and fell to Hector Norman. The other two races were for hacks, which as usual with races of this description were very spiritedly contested, the time m which one of them was decided, a mile. (1 mm. 59 sees.), being very quick for a hack event.
