WAIHI CROSSING.
A meeting of ratepayers was held at the Waihi Crossing Bchool on Monday evening last, for the purpose of receiving the report of the outgoing committee, and to elect another for the ensuing year. Mr Howard, at the request of the meeting, occupied the chair. Mr Young, as chairman of the late committee, with a few prefatory remarks, read the following report of the state of the school and the action tuken by the committee during the past year : — RePOBT OB THE WAIHI CROSSING SCHOOL Committee. The School Committee have much pleasure m presenting this their third Annual Report, and m doing so, they beg to congratulate the inhabitants of the district upon the efficient manner m which the Bchool was conducted during the greater portion of the past year by Mr Irving. Upon the resignation of that gentlemau, Mr Mclntosh was appointed to the mastership of the school, and has ably and efficiently conducted it during the past quarter, to tho entire satisfaction of the committee and parents of the children. Mr Mclntosh opened the school on the Bth July, 1872, with an attendance of 30 children, this number has steadily increased to an average daily attendance of 53, and a roll of 65. The committee commenced the past year with a debt of £24 16s 2d, this, sum, together with other small accounts, making a total of £31 15s sd, has been paid by the proceeds arising from a gift auction, Boiree and entertainment. The committee take this opportunity of thanking all those ladies and gentlemen who so kindly assisted them m clearing the school from this debt. There has also been a further sum of £41 5s expended upon the school property, as per accounts laid before you. This sum has been paid from money received from the Board of Education. The total amount collected by school rates during, the past year was £53 17s 3d. Of this amount (less charges upon collection and advertisements, £4 65,) your committee have expended £48 12s 2d, leaving a balance 19s Id, as will be seen from the accounts. There is a debt of £9 12s 6d incurred m advertising for a school-master, which sum, it iB understood, the Board of Education will pay. There remains necessary work m the schoolyard and m the completion of the master's residence, that will require the sum of nearly £22. This work your committee thought it as well to leave for the consideration of the new committee. The Committee before closing the report, desire to thank Mrs Mclntosh for her kindness m assisting m the sshool during the past quarter, and regret the Board will not allow any remuneration for the Eame, but are glad the Board has sanctioned her appointment as assistant and sewing mistress, to date from the lßt of October. The Committee also beg to thank the auditors for their kindness m auditing the accounts. The Committee also express their entire satisfaction of the masters' capabilities as a teacher, and the great progress made by the children during the paßt quarter. J. A. The following gentlemen were then elected by ballot to form a committee for the ensuing year . — Messrs Young, Tnylor, Howard, Anderson, Engle, Lewis Shaw, Stewart, and Klee. Mr Anderson: — "That Messrs Clarke and Paterson be auditors for the ensuing year." Resolved — " That a vote of thanks be given to Mr Smith for taking the ballot." Eesolyed — " That a vote of thanks be given the retiring committee." After a vote of thanks to the chairman, the meeting separated.
