Local Government League. — A meeting of the Committee -will be held this day at noon, at Mr C'urdale's offices. Persons wanting servants had better at once make application to Mr W. C. Beswick. Abowhenua. — Two Justices of the Peace should have attended at the Resident Magistrates Court Arowhenua on Wednesday last, the 25th ultimo, but through some mistake as to the day, no Magistrate was present. The Court was adjourned for 14 days by the Clerk of the Bench. Black Swans.— A short time since we reported there were five of these birds m the Washdyke lagoon ; but a gentleman tells us that two or three days ago he came across eight all m one flock. Christohurch Mail.— On and after Monday next, the. 7th instant, Cobb and Co purpose again to run through to Christchurch m a day. The railway being opened to the Selwyn will enable travellers to make the journey iv a more pleasant and expeditious manner than formerly. Resident Magistrate's Court. — Yesterday, at this Court, before W. C. Beswick and H. Belfield, Esqs., J.Ps., but one civil case was heard — H. Salomon y. Gray, debt of £3 11s. Judgment for plaintiff with costs. Leasing Timaru Landing Service.— Captain J. Field Crawford, the successful tenderer for the-Landing Service, formerly commanded a ship m the trade between England and China. The contract; is for three years, during which the lessee is to pay £500, £600, and £700 respectively. New Hysinalu — We would draw the attention of Church members that a meeting of the parishioners will be held this evening, at 7 o'clock, at St. Mary's Church, to consider the advisability of adopting, m addition to the New Zealand Hymnal, now m use, another selection of hymns. It is earnestly to be hoped that the parishoncrs will attend on this occasion to make known their views on the question to be brought before them. The Curate, m whose hands ließ the selection of hymns or psalms to be sung m the Church, is unwilling to make any important alterations m the Church music, without, first ascertain--ing the sense of the congregation. Death op Mr Leslie Thomson. — We regret exceedingly to learn that Mr Leslie Thomson, an old settler, and late member for Timaru m the Provincial Council, died on board the R. M. Steam Company's ship Douro oa the passage to England from Panama. ' Mr Thomson left Canterbury by the June Panama mail, intending to stay a short time m England and then return to the colony. It appears that the deceased gentleman was detained some days at St Thomas waiting for the steamer, and there, probably he caught the desease from which he subsequently died. Timaru Landing Company. — The following' tender was forwarded to the Government from the Timaru Landing and Shipping Company, which has been rejected m favor of the one sent by Mr Crawford, of Dunedin : — " The Timaru Landing and Shipping Company beg herewith to tender for the leasing of the Government plant at a rental of ten pounds (£10) per annum, on the conditions laid down by the Government, but beg to state they tender for a nominal rental only with a view to reduce at once the rate of charges, and enclose schedule of rates, whereby the Government will note that considerable reduction is intended upon their advertised schedule, and further, that they intend to continue reducing the rates year by year, as the trade of the place increases, to enable such to be done. The company accepts all the proposed responsibility except encroachments of the sea upon the ways and buildings, and also beg to call the attention of the Government to the impossibility of any tenderer assenting to the 3rd clause without the wool-shed is placed beyond danger. The following are the rates proposed by the company to be levied : — Landing charges — Merchandize, 9s per ton ; timber, Is 6d per 100 feet ; coal, 5s per ton. Shipping charges — Merchandize, 5s per ton ; produce. Id per bushel ; wool, 2a per bale, outer anchorage ; Is Cd, inner anchorage ; ballast, 5s per ton ; passengers to and fro, Is 6d, per small boat ; 20s per life boat Messrs Geo. G. Russell, Henry John LeCren, Richard Turabull, Henry Cain, and Julius Mendelson, are the gentlemen who will sign any document required by the Government, being the present provisional directors for the company." A meeting of the committee was held on Monday at Mr Cardale's offices. Present — Messrs H. J. LeCren, Mendelson, Cardale, King, F. LeCren, Turnhull, and Stubbs. The articles of association were read and adopted. The committee instructed the Secretary to send an application to the Timaru Municipal Council for. the use of a portion of the Timaru beach for the purpose of erecting a capstan and sheds required by the company. The part applied for is the unoccupied reserve at the corner of George itreet.

Fatal Accident. — Yesterday morning a| son of Mr Alexander Mein, .of Kakahu, was found dead on the road between Kakahu and Arowhenua. The boy was driving a dray, and it ia supposed he tumbled off, and the dray passing over his body caused his death. The dray and horses were found at some distance from the body. An inquest will be held to-day before Mr Belfield, JTP.
