Commercial Intelligence.

" ' ' Herald " Office, Timaru, Tuesday evening. Mr Petrie will hold an auction sale of cattle, horses, and saddlery, at the Crown Hotel stockyards Temuka, this day at 1 o'clock. WRIGHT, ROBERTSON & CO.'S REPORT. In their monthly circular Wright, Robertson & Co report : — As we anticipated, business has been very brisk since our lost report ; every class of stock lias been m demand, and prices fully maintained. Cattle continues scarce, stores being iv great request ; several large mobs have exchanged hands .at full rates. The market for fat stock has been well supplied, both with sheep and cattle ; but, notwithstanding, prices have ruled high, •and are likely to do till after the shearing, which, •on some stations, has now commenced. We have numerous enquiries for mixed lambs, but as yet no sales have been effected. Sellers are taking the prices ruling the latter end of last season as their guide for this, but we fancy the fine lambing ■which has taken place over the whole country, the majority of which will be for sale, ■will prevent prices touching the extreme rates reached last season. Full-mouth ewes are enquired for, and several lots have changed hands at last year's prices. The enquiry for maiden ewes is also considerable, and prices realised fully up to last season. Four and six-tooth ewes are also m request, but, as yet we hear of none having been sold. Wethers are not so much m demand as we expected ; m Canterbury, however, large sales nave taken place at excellent prices— l6s 6d to 17s m the wool, and 12s after shearing — having been obtained. Fat Cattle. — The market has been fairly supplied. Our sales at the yards and privately have been 169 head bullocks and cows, which brought from £12 10s to £23, being at the rate of 55s per lOOlbs for prime, and 50s for middling j quality, which we now quote as market lates. Store Cattle. — In great demand. Our sales completed during the month amount to 759 head, which we sold at from £5 15s to £S 10s per head, according to age. We quote bullocks, three years and upwards, £12 to £13 ; mixed cattle, from two to five years, £9 to £10 ; one to two years, £5 15s to £G. One lot of 300, from one year and upwards, we sold at £7 15. Working Bullocks are worth about £30 to £32 a pair ; fair demand. Milch Cows. — We have sold several lots from £11 to £17. We quote really fine cows, m full milk, at £20 to £25, easily saleable. Ordinary from £10 to £15. Fat Sheep. — Market has been well supplied, but prices have remained linn. We have sold on account of Messrs Calcutt and Meulove, Ord, Fenwick, and others, 2,700 at prices averaging from 19s to 24s 8d each. One fine lot from the station of Mr M'Neil fetched the latter price. Messrs Calcutt and Menlove's lot fetched 225. We quote prime mutton 5Jd per lb m town. Mr

Ord's lots we sold delivered at Tokomairiro at that price— a very good lot, as usual. Fat L amiss. — The first of the season offered at our yards were from Mr A. Todd's farm on the Taieri, and fetched all round 18s Gd each. Some inferior lambs were sold at from lls to 13s. Our usual sale of lambs, &c. m the season will now b<: held every Thursday, at the Commercial Yards. Stoije Sheep. — The demand for mixed lambs and breeding Ewes is considerable. Wethers are not yet much m request. We have sold, for delivery this side the Waitaki beginning of next month, 0,000 ewe hoggets m the wool, at 21s each for all not shorn as lambs, and 20s for shorn ; /!,000 six-tooth and full-mouth ewes, equal proportions, delivery m February, at 13s each ; y,OOO full-mouth tivt;, delivery m March, at 11s. We have al.so under offer 4000 mixed lambs at 20s per pair, which we think will be taken. We consider this an extreme rate at this season, but the lot is very superior. We quote maiden ewes, for delivery after shearing, from 17s to 18s ; two, four, and six tooth, 10s to 17s ; full-mouth, 10s Gd to 11s; broken, Cs to Ss; Wethers m wool, 15s to IG.s Gd. After shearing we can sell four and six tooth at I Is. We have one lot of 7.000, very good, at this price. Imj'oktkj) Sheki 1 . —We have now m paddock, ex Hydra, from Melbourne, 294 Leicester, Lincoln, liamhouillet and Cotswold sheep — rams, ewes, and hofTgetts— a remarkably veil bred lot, bred by Mr Field, of Tasmania, to which we would draw the attention of farmers and breeders. They are at present for private sale at very moderate prices. |[oi;.-ii:s. —On the sth iustant the "Hydra" arrived from Melbourne with a cargo of 81 horses, GO of which (Mr Gidney's lot) were consigned to us. They consisted of medium sized draft colts and fillies and useful hacks. We sold them m two drafts, and on both occasions the attendance was good and competition brisk. The prices realised ranged from £1G to £G4. On the Bth iustant the " Omeo" brought about 40 magnificent heavy and medium draught horses, which met with a ready sale. There are still numerous buyers for good animals of all descriptions. First-class light harness and saddle horses are uncommonly scarce. We quote prices realised at the late sales : — First-class heavy draught, £70 to £80 ; medium do., £30 to £45 ; first-class hacks and light harness horses, £30 to £45 ; common do., £15 to £25. Station I'isorEUTY'— We hear of no sales, and do not expect bnsiness will be done till after shearing; we will then have to offer oue of the finest runs m Otago, particulars of which will be duly advertised. Country Sales. — At our sales m the country this month no business of importance has been transacted. We bfcg to call attention to our advertisement announcing monthly sales at the new yards of Mr Joseph Beal, Waikouaiti. At the request of numerous influential settlers m the district, they will be held on the second Wednesday of every month.
