TIMARU MUNICIPAL COUNCIL.
Theusnal fortnightly meeting of the above Council was held last Monday. Seven members were present Mr. Hewlings occupied the Chair./
The minutes of the previous meeting were read and confirmed.
/k. tender from Mr. Overmyer, for boring for water, was read and discussed. Farther information being required, Mr. Overmyer was sent for, who stated that his scale of charges per twenty feet; thej total of which amounted for the 300 feet to £228, wasj with a proviso, that the Council provided apparatus./ lie also stated that the plant for boring now m the possession of the Council, if they had the required length, was sufficiently strong for the purpose, if worked m a proper manner.
'After comparing former- tenders, it was resolved "that another advertisement be inserted m the Timaru Herald calling for tenders to bore for water, All particulars as to apparatus to be obtained on application to the Clerk of the CounpiL" J
Resolved, "that Mr. Healeybe requested to draw up specifications, to be submitted for the approval of the Council, and that the following be the heads:— "That the Council find apparatus.
namely : Ropes, pulleys, shears, horse, springbar, windlass, spin cradle, and 150 feet of rods, now m possession ; but should they prove insufficient m length, to further supply 150 feet more of the same standard or description, which shall be accepted as sufficient. Tubing also to be found, which is to be properly fixed by the contractor. — The contractor must, at his own expense, keep them m working order, and on the completion of the work must return them m good order. — The Council will not hold themselves responsible for any unnecessary suspension of the work that may probably arise m procuring a further supply of the apparatus. — The depth of the well to be 300 feet, unless sufficient water is struck above that depth. — The person tendering must give a uniform scale of charges for every twenty feet, and must find satisfactory sureties for the completion of the contract to the satisfaction of the Council.— Seventy-five per cent, payments will be made on the work m course of progress, but should the contractor fail to complete his contract, the sureties will be responsible for the refunding of the payments made." A letter from Mr. Inglis was read, m which Messrs. G. G. Russell and Co. proposed to erect a covered stone culvert, 27 yards long, over the town drain, on the Beach Road, outside that adjoining the applicants premises, and joining that which the Road Board has erected, on condition that the Council promise to refund the amount when funds were available. The Council ruled that they could not entertain the matter, as the drain m question ran through the Government reserve, which .had not been handed over to the Municipal Council. It was then resolved " That a b'st be drawn up showing the Rate Roll, and the amount of rate each person was subject to, and appended to the Mechanics' Institute." It was also resolved, " That a rate of Is m the pound be levied, and the Clerk of the Council carry out the provisions of clause 25, Municipal Council Ordinance, and that an advertisement be inserted m the Timaru Herald, that the Council will meet at the Mechanics' Institute, to hear objections, from 12 to 1, o'clock on Monday 18th June."
