PRESSURE UPON THE GOVERNMENT TOR FACILITIES OF TRANSIT.
With those great facts of the then opened goldn'elds before them— the anticipation of new, a. id perhaps greater discoveries -the enormously increasing traffic m the ports, and on the leading thoroughfares throughout the province, it can easily be perceived what pressure was brought to bear upon tho Government for increased fa ilities and accommodation for the necessities of the situation. Meetings of the inhabitant* were held, and numerously attended, and resolutions were passed thereat condemnatory of the m lotion of the Government m providing means f>i communication throughout the province— the then circuitous tracks to the interior having become thoroughly cut up and almost impassable. Influential deputations of the leading merchants continually waited upon the Government with urgent appeals for increased facilities of transit both m the harbours and leading arteries of traffic throughout the country. Indeed, the whole weight of the community, both of Southland and tho Lake districts, may be said to have been exerted to this end.
