Thames-Coromandel Road.
ITS IMPORTANCE TO THAMES. RESOLUTION PASSED BY THE J3OROUGH COUNCIL. At the meeting of tlio Borough Council on Thursday, the Mayor. (Mr Greenelnde) moved the following resolution: (l)That.in,.the opinion of this Council it .is .'flf the! greatest importance to the.* Thanicg and the inter* mediate-; districts ; that better road communication should exist between the Thames, and .Coromandel. (2). 'That this Council most heartily supports the efforts being made by the Thamesy:- and Coromandel , County Council to induce the Government to assist in the construction of a road suitable for coach and vehicular traffic between the Thames and Coromandel, and is strongly of opinion that should give a substantial vote for that purpose. (3). That a copy of this resolution be forwarded to the Thames and Coromandel County Councils, and a communication be sent to the Hon. A. J. Cadman, Minister of Mines, urging upon him the necessity for giving such assistance as will enable the work to be speedily undertaken." In moving'the resolution Mr. Greenslade said he had no doubt that it would at once commend itself to Councillors,, as, though th* construction of the road did not come within the province of the Borough, yet it was a matter of vital interest to the whole Thames community, and as a Council they should give their utmost support to the proposal and agitate for vehicular communication imco. It was simply disgraceful that two such important centres as the Thames and Coromandel should have been in existence for so many years, and had not years ago been connected by a good road and the I necessity obviated of having to go to! Auckland by steamer and proceed from there to Coromandel by steamer. He was informed upon what he be- j lieved to be reliable authority that only some five miles of road would require to be constructed, and that the cost would not be more than some £4000 or £4500, ■ Cr. Wood seconded, the resolution, and said it had his heartiest support. He concurred that, it was disgraceful that the road had not been constructed] years ago, and urged that they should agitate in the.direction indicated. He differed from the 1 Mayor, however, as to the probable cost, as he understood it would bo a rather costly undertaking, but even if it cost £10,000 or £20,000, it should be,done. Cr Poulgrain spoke in support d the motion, and Baid the work was one of great importance: to both centres, and they should do everything possible to assist the. Thames and County Councils in their endeavor to induce the Government to give substantial assistance. The resolution was then put and carried unanimously. '*■ '
