County Council
' At 4he meeting of the County Council on Thursday evening the following additional business was transacted :—
Omahu Quabry.—The Engineer reported :—" On account of the western face of the Omahu quarry giving insuffioiont stone to supply the two con. tracts' and Short's); I was obliged to determine Teddy's contract for the supply of Btone between Matatoke and Puriri. I had then to lalso stop Short's contract,to remove ■ over 500 tons of rubbish to get afresh [face, but I could not let. him start | again as the good stone ' ran out,' and ,as the Government had no other face I with good Btone to give us, I had, on the 30th. ult., to determine Short's con tract also, he only having delivered a little over half his quantity, that is, [529 out;of 1000 loads."-The Ohair- | man stated that the getting out of the J stone from the quarry had been costing 10s per load, and as this could not jgo on, he had authorised the action reported by the Engineer—Resolved, on the motion of Or Killgour, that the Chairman's action be approved. Matatoke • Creek and Flotaoe Eights.—The Engineer reported: - "lhe northerly gale with heavy rain on 20th- and 21st May, caused great freshes in all the creeks. The new booms in the Matatoke, as had been foreseen, proved insufficient to prevent (damage, as seven kauri, as well as other logs, and a great quantity of timber rubbish, got past and, of course, lodged in the Matatoke Road main drain, blocking the water and causing an overflow on the road. The work of clearing was at once started, but as. the kauri logs (which were from 5 ; to H feet long) could not he got out, they had to be blasted, and horses with chains used to remove them, so as to prevent further damage and silting up."—The Chairman said the flotage license had been granted by the Waste Lands Board in spite of the protest of the Council and of the settlers. Ho thought that the account for the cost of repairing the damage, when made up, should be. forwarded to the Board, and moved in that direction.—Cr Corbett seconded, , the motion was carried.—The Chairman stated that the, conditions of the grant of the ■ flotags license wore not yet to hand. ~ . Gravel for Turua,—The Engineer reported;-" Be ; Messrs ;1 Bagnalis' application for gravel for footpaths, , the circumstances are that the Government aro building,.and have nearly completed, a; new, school house, entirely away, from the present one, which.faces the river, lhe new one 1 is situated south of the township and has. its frontage to the Turua-Nethwr-ton Road, consequently new footpaths i and drains are required from 7 to 8 1 chains long. The Committee propose to make the expenditure for forming , drains and footpaths, which will cost about £15, and also to cart and spread the gravel at a further cost of about ; £3, if the County supply the gravel. I estimate the cost oitwo large punt loads delivered at the wharf at from £14 to £15."—Resolved on the motion of Or Deeble, seconded by Or Corbett, that the gravel be supplied.
