THE UNEMPLOYED.
There can be no denying the acute reality of the depression existing locally, nor the material preiwnce of the unemployed nightmare.' It would. be superfluous to dwell on the causes thereof, save to point out that the previous influx of labor from other parts of the colony tends to swell the ranks of the workless considerably. The principal alleviation must of course come by the opening—by tribute or otherwise—of ground at present locked up, and with this end in view the Committee of tho Miners' Union is owing in the direotion of holdinr a Conference next week with the Chamber of Mines, and has appointed the Pi'osident (Mr Pott) and the Secretary (Mr Lucas) to proceed to Auckland as soon as convenient for that purpose. As a secondary, source of assistance, there is the inauguration locally of Government co-operative and relief works, about which various suggestions are made. To our mind, the most practical form of relief in this direction is to employ more men on the railway, and we hope that Mr Cadman and the Public Works Minister will be able to lay their heads together and accomplish something substantial in this direotion.' Meanwhile, further evidences of depression are coming to hand, daily. Wo understand that within the last couple of days twenty* five men have been discharged, by the fortiina-Hauraki Company, and a rough estimate of the local unemployed places the number at 250.
