THE BOMBARDMENT OF SAN JUAN. - CUTTING THE CABLES. HEAVY FIGHTING. SPANIARD 3 ;LOSE HEAVILYf [Per Mariposa.] ' (Per Press Association,) ' Auckland, June 8. On May 12th, Commodore Sampson's squadron bombarded San Juan de Porto Rico, silenced the forts, and fired the town. •A Spanish shot, hit the New York, killed one man and wounded four. The lowa was hit once, three men being hurt. .. The Wilmington was not touched. On May 12th: the Marble Head, Nashville, and Windom entered Cienfugos \to cut the cable connecting Havana and Santiago. • :The;task was after a terrific fight; seven Americans being wounded and one killed.
The Spanish loss was 400 killed.
