The Dust Evil.

THE MATTERBEFORETHE COUNCIL. A nuinbor of businoss peoplo of Pollen street forwarded a petition to the Borough Council 6n Thursday requesting that something should be immediately done to remedy tho dust evil. Or Whitehead asked what had been done by tho Council in tho matter? The Town Clerk said that the General Purposes Committee had docided that if tho County Council* would supply a half-sluice head of water the Borough would allow a supply to, be used in watering the streets, but tlioso who wanted the convenience would have to supply the labor required for the purpose.

Or Scott said that while some of the tradespeople were willing to find money for the work others were not. Or Foy and also Or Scott thought Mr Waterman, an ex-Corporation employee, would be a good man to cany out the work and they suggested that he should be asked to see what financial assistance would be given by tradespeople. Both Oounoillors thought those who wanted tho dust kept down should put their hands in their pockets and find a contribution towards tho cost.

The Mayor said Mr Waterman Would not be willing to go to any person on tho mattor if ho thought ho wns likely to got such a reception as had 1 been givon him (Mr Eadiord) by ono of those agitating in tho matter. Mr Geo. Donby had blamed him for thwarting tho proposals for finding tho water, but ho would toll him that although ho was and had over boon agrooablo to do what was fair and just he was not going to bo a party to givo to ono section of tho ratepayers what was denied another, or in other words, he was determined that so far as ho was concorned water should not bo given hap-hazard to tho Pollen stroet people when thoro woro pooplo in •other parts of the town who only now get water for domestic purposes throo days a week. In accusing him of doing anything onesided, ho was wrongly-blamed, but then it was as easy for some men to tell lies as it ,was for honest men to draw breath. Or Burch was of opinion'that if Pollen street was watered all rmrts of the town, should be similarly treated. Or Scott against that argument contended that Pollen streot carried most of the traffic.

After some furthor discussion of a dosultory nature, it was resolved that the attention of tho petitioners be drawn to the docision the Council had already come to in the matter. .
