NEW ZEALAND EDUCATIONAL INSTITUTE.
The local -branch of tho Now Zealand Educational Institute hold its regular meeting last evening. A considerable amount of important business was transacted. Tho proposed establishment of a Central School was discussed and objected to for "the following reasons (1) That heretofore tho whole of the work prescribed for Standards V. and VT. has boon taught in the public schools of tho Thames with great satisfaction to the Inspectors of Schools as evidenced by their reports; (2) 'I hat the establish merit of siu-h a school would involve the establishment of similar schools in other contros at a greatly increased cost to tho country; and (o) That tho number of children t.fc present in Standards V., VI., and VIT. of local schools was over 300 and not 150 as stated, It was resolved to draw the attention of the Com'mittees to the fact that the wording of the resolution, "That in the opinion of the C .nfevence it is absolutely necessary that the Board send better teachers to tho Thames schools," passed at the recent Conference reflected upon local teachers as a whcle, and although this was doubtless quite unintentional it was calculated to injure them individually when applying for promotion, especially as the resolution 1 was publishad in an Auckland paper without any explanatory remarks.
