RIVER POLLUTION BY MINES.
A public meeting was held at.Paeroaon Saturday night to discuss the matter of the ,contamination of the Ohinemuri River. Mr James McAndrew presided, and there way a good attendance. Mr Cock, tho convenor,introduced the business of tho evening by reading an article from the Auckland Heraldt and cjm men ting omit. He wosenti rely opposed to anyone having a license to make a dirty ditch of the river. Mr Cassrells followed in iliesame strain, and said the public should protest against the' proposed proclamation and find out what the Thames Borough Council would do in the matter,
Mr Edwards' opened on the other side and pooh pooh'd ihe opinion of the former speaker. He said it was only a mattor of the discolouration of the water and the killing of a fgw eels. He concluded by moving ''that this meeting agrees that the mining industry by which wo live has the first right to the rivers of Ohinemuri, provided that they are not permanently injured thereby." Mr Jordan seconded.
After a considerable amount; of discussion, and the proposal and withdrawal of several motion?, it was finally moved and carried, " that the matter be left to the County Council."
The Tribune wind up a tronchaat loader on the subject by saying " It is a scandal and a shame that any portion of the re* fuse of a process using a deadly poison should bo allowed to escape into the walors of a river which has to be usod for domestic purposes,"
